New to me 99
« on: September 11, 2006, 06:10:07 AM »
I just inherited a 99 serial # 372XXX. It has a Hensoldt Wetzlar 2 3/4X scope on it. Unless the markings are under the scope mount, I am unsure about which model this is.

Can anyone please tell me the date of manufacture and if the scope is correct for the period. All I can find about the scope is that it Hensoldt was acquired by Zeiss at some point.

Thank you in advance.

According to my records, your rifle was manufactured in late 1937.

It is possibly an early "EG" model.  If so, it will have a slender forearm with a schnoble end of the muzzle end of the forearm and it won't have any checkering on the forearm or the butt-stock.  If in .22 Hi_power, .250-3000 or .30-30, it will have a 22" barrel.  If in .300 Savage caliber, it will have a 24-inch barrel.

It will have a semi-buckhorn rear sight, wood will be plain walnut with rubbed oil finish.  The buttplate will be corrugated shotgun-type steel and it will have a capped pistol grip.

As to the sight... I am not familiar with the 'scope sight you mentioned, but that doesn't mean much since I'm not all that familiar with that brand of sight or with the sights of that period.  However, it was not a factory-original sight.  In fact, the EG model was not drilled and tapped for scope mounts until 1957.
