Your topic says (Please Delete).  I'm a little confused.  Do you really want me to delete is?  Why?

If not, then I can reply that I would pick the Browning over the Savage.

there's no debate.  even savage fans would admit that browning makes better guns.

the browning itself is nicer, the bolt is tighter and the fit of the whole gun is better, but the sav will shoot just as good all day long and cost a lot les

I actually agree.  Savages, in my opinion, are sub par with regards to quality and fit and finish.  That notwithstanding, however, there is no question that Savages, generally speaking, are very accurate right out of the box.

It's kinda funny - I was at the range some years back.  I had my Browning A-Bolt Stainless Stalker(the original A-Bolt, not the newer A-Bolt II design) in .270 Win.  I was shooting, at the time, Federal Premium 130 grain Sierra Boat-tails.  My groups were under 1/2" at 100 yards, which is outstanding.  There was a guy next to me with a blued, wood-stocked Savage, also in .270 Win.  I forgot what ammo he was using, but he was also shooting 1/2" groups.  Nearby shooters were looking at our targets downrange and were just amazed at the accuracy of these guns.  They would come over and give a good look at our guns.  Some would even ask "hey, what the heck are you guys shooting?!? Those are the smallest groups I have ever seen!"  We both answered what we were shooting.  A couple of guys asked how much money our respective guns cost.  My Browning SS, at the time, I purchased for about $499 back in 1989.  They guy with the Savage said that he paid less than half that.  Granted, none of the onlookers actually held our guns in their hands to see that the Browning was a much better gun in terms of quality and fit and finish.  However, quite a few people said.  Heck, it looks like the guy with the Browning paid "double for nothing."

I smiled, but, in a way, he did kinda have a point.

Browning sells a pretty rifle, not necessarilly a better gun. For accuracy, durability, and ease of up-keep, I'd go Savage every time.

I don't think I have a favorite rifle but I can't understand the Savage is a crappy gun that shoots good line or that they are ugly. Why would anyone pay $700+ dollars for a better rifle then lay out more money to get it to shoot like a Savage? Ang generally I think they look good. What I don't like is that funky "Savage" on the bolt and the bolt release. I've shot a lot of different brands of rifles and most were good rifles, my next new one will be a Savage.

Browning.

Boss..either muzzle brake or CR.

Magazine...super easy to load and unload.

Palm swell...love/hate..I love mine.

Stock...stiffer.

Bolt throw....less lift makes for an easier follow up shot if need be.

More money but worth it over the long haul.

I'll go with the minority opinion, and say get the Savage, then put the difference toward a top-end scope.  While I agree the Browning has a higher quality fit and finish, the Savage fits me better.  YMMV, and enjoy whichever you choose.

Mike

Savage ain't the prettiest, but they shoot.  But beyond a certain point, there's more to a rifle than how accurately it shoots.  Granted, I invest time & money in finding that load that's better than the rest for each gun.  But realistically, whether the rifle shoots 1/2" groups or 1 1/2" groups at 100 yards, either way the gun shoots better than I can from a field rest or position.  If I'm supporting the rifle against a tree or sitting with my elbows on my knees, that little bit of extra accuracy in the rifle ain't likely to make much difference in where I can put the bullet.

Unless you get a lemon, they're both good guns and will shoot well.  Get the one within your budget that looks and feels best to you.

P.S. - I wonder how much difference that 30 degrees in bolt throw really makes in getting a second shot off.  If a speedy followup shot is that critical, why would anyone go for a long action when you should be able to cycle a short action quicker.  A slow shooter will be slow regardless of how many degrees of bolt lift he has to work.  A fast shooter who practices with his gun will get a quick second shot regardless of action length or degrees of bolt travel.

The Savages are great shooting very reliable and dependable guns. The Brownings are also good shooting reliable guns. The Brownings are more expensive because they may have higher quality construction and look much better. The question is whether you want a Chevy or a Cadillac. Either will get the job done extremely well in the field.

I went by gander mountain last saturday...they had those new savage rifles I believe they call them the american classic..vey nice walnut with ebony grip and forearm cap, nice bluing and it felt great..I was holding out for a win 70 featherwieght in .308..BUT I think i'll go with this savage..it was $499.00 which is still cheaper the remmy or ruger..plus I don't have to jack with it to shhot good or replace the fargin trigger...both will save me a couple hundred..

All things being equal a shorter bolt lift will always be faster than a higher bolt lift...but that wasn't the whole thing. Hopefull you wont need a second or third shot.  I just feel the Browning has a lot to offer....and it feels better to me. And to me accuracy isn't in the running as one of the most important factors...although both guns should be pleny accurate.

Most importantly...pick both up and play a little with them. You most likely will like one better.

I have a savage weather warrior in 7mm 08 and a miroku m-bolt in 223. Browning a bolts are made by miroku. The savage represents great value for money and it shoots well. The miroku is a very nice rifle the finish and the action are first class it is also a very accurate gun. Both triggers are adjustable. The main thing that lets the savage down is the stock and the internal mag.

A favourite well thats easy the miroku is hands down the winner.

I own two Savage rifles and two Browning rifles.  I like both brands.  The post above summed up the differences pretty well.

I know I'm not much help in your decision, so get one of each!

Savage vs. Browning that easy, Browning. Now why a distant cousin of mine from out of state SC travels with his father to Western PA to go deer hunting since it is cooler, and let me tell you the last two years he has had horror stories with his Savage. First year his Savage would not eject the fired empty brass case, So he sent it back to the company got a new rifle the next year the rifle's firing pin wouldn't make contact with the primmer aka no boom.  This may have been a ammo problem or some bad mojo on his case. My older brother used to have a older moder LH Savage which I field striped and used about 3/4 a bottle of hoppes to clean the bolt and barrel. The Savage bolt is much more complex than my model 70 winchester.

Now Pros on Browning at a gunclub in North central PA a member was shooting clovers at a target with reloads with a Browning A bolt 308win with a boss. I really like the A-bolt 1000 Eclipse 308 with a boss.  Though I think I will get a CZ 550 Varmint laminated 308 and put a shepard or zeiss scope and a bipod on it for the money.  ;D

There's advantages and disadvantages in either one.

Sounds to me like you oughta base your decision on which gun "feels" better when you shoulder it.  I use a benchrest for trouble shooting and working up a load.  After that, it's how well I can shoot the gun off-hand or from various field positions that matters most.  That's where the "feel" comes in.

Shoulder the gun with your eyes closed.  Then open your eyes.  If the sights are lined up or the scope is in full-view you've got a good fit.  Next hold it on aim for a minute, see if you can keep one steadier than the other.

Black Jaque Janaviac - Dat's who!

Hawken - the gun that made the west wild!
