Mossberg ATR vs. Stevens 200
« on: September 08, 2006, 12:16:36 PM »
Anyone have any experience on how these two rifles compare? They both have gotten good reports for accuracy are in sthe same price range. My 14 year old wants a bigger rifle and he currently shoots a .243 win. He wants either a 30-06 or 270.

I've had the ATR since just after it was introduced.  Its a .30-06 and shoots just fine.  1" -1 1/2"  3 shot groups with Rem Core Locts and Winchester Power Point 180 gr rounds is the norm.  I'll have a new hard wood stock version of the ATR in .308 as soon as I can find one.  I have a older Savage 110 in .30-06 without the accu-trigger, which I'm told is pretty much what the Stevens 200 is.  It shoots as well as the ATR.  I'm certain they are capable of 1" or less all the time, if I could do my part each time.  The Savage shoot Federal Hi-Shok and Power Shok 180's best.  If I don't find a .308 ATR soon, I'm going to get the Stevens in 7-08.

There are tons of info on both, but the search feature is out of order.

Good luck with your chioce.

In the past Mossberg has been in and out of the high power rifle business. Just when they get one worked out, they make major changes, not all for the good, and drop the line when sales fall off. At least their barrel nut looks better than the one on the Savage.  8)

Have not had a mossberg, but have several savage rifles, some old, some new..  I'd suggest savage, for reputation, and the company's longevity in the centerfire business.  THEY are there to stay.  Plus you can change calibers pretty easy in a savage.  With the Mossberg, you never know if they will even make it next year.

I have the mossberg in 270caliber and I also have a couple of stevens model 200's.
I like the feel of the mossburg, but I like the way the stevens shoots.I usally could tell
you which one is better,But this time I can't.Too me there fairly equal on the range. 8)

I always try to keep an open mind about rifles and will give most of them an honest try ( expensive to the less expensive). As long as they perform decent and feel safe they will  stay....if they don't they go. I have a stevens 200 in .223 and all I can say is that it is very accurate. .3 to .5 groups if I do my part. My son has a mossberge atr 100 that is sub moa in 30-06. Niether of thease guns may not win any beauty contests, but they aren't that bad either for the money laid down for them. Just my 2 cents.  Oh yeah I belive Mossy and Savage who makes Stevens are married. Not sure how that goes, but someone may have the answear on that.

I have the ATR in .270 and it is a good rifle. The swivel mounts are kind of fragile, but other than that I have no complaints at all. Shoots as good as my Savage Model 11 in .308

My son killed 2 deer with the ATR lsat year.  The plastic triggerguard got broke, so I replaced it with one off of a Remington 700ADL.  I like the ATR.

im a savage fan, so i suggest the 200.  and if you look on midway usa there is a ton of parts available for it.  you have to look under savage model 10 for short action and 110 for long action 200's

FWIW, Jim Carmichel did a follow up to the 2005 test on a .243Win ATR in the Oct 2006 Outdoor life, other than the heavy 6lb2oz trigger that was "quick and crisp" which was an improvement over the original test gun, accuracy was improved with factory ammo averaging under 1½ moa 5-shot groups with the first 3 under moa but with barrel warming, groups opened up. He shot a 3-shot group of .394" with 65gr handloads.

I have 2 Stevens , 7-08 and 25-06, and a 270 Mossberg..   I prefer the Stevens, more accurate, better trigger.

The trigger on the ATR we have is light and breaks like glass with no creep.  It is also adjustable.
