OK what did I get?
« on: September 05, 2006, 04:11:31 AM »
I just picked this up.  It seems to be a varmint gun but the name on it is BREDA + a date.  It looks like a Mannlicher Schoenauer? See the pictures.  Best thing it is a 6.5 X 55.  The scope is an 8X56 Kahles, oh my is that some clear glass.  Any help with identification will be greatly appreciated.

Looks to be a mannlicher schoener but I'm not up enough to determine the model. The stock appears to be flame grained curly maple. Probably acid stained or perhaps 'suiged'(sp.).  It provdes a dark color but the stock has highlites that just burning wouldn't provide. I'd better a chemical stain.. Sure is pretty though! I don't care for the style but it certainly looks well executed.

I would say the stock is flame maple and it looks to me that it was given a coat of water base stain and then sanded off to bring out the highlites.  But that is just a guess.

That's sure a nice looking rifle, and in 6.5 Swede yet - Nice find BigBoar.  It looks like a Mannlicher Schoenaur but I can't tell.  You said it had 'Breda' and a date on it - is Breda an Austrian firm?????  Mikey.

No actually it is an Italian firm.  When the Allies put restrictions on Germany/Austria after WWI.  Mannlicher Schoenauer had a contract with this Italian Co. to produce the rifles.  The action is actually a cross between the Greek and later Mannlicher Schoenauer rifles.  The quality is there and many think Breda was just a front and the rifle were in fact built in Austria.  Only 100,000 were made.

BigBoar - it sure sounds like you got yourself a sweet shooter.  Interesting note about 'Breda', too.  The quality should definately be there and in a 6.5x55 caliber, ya can't lose.  I hope you take that sweetie out this season.  Mikey.
