New Classic 700 in 243 looking for loads
« on: August 29, 2006, 05:40:29 PM »
I just bought 3 classics form a old collectors widow and the 221 and the duece are real tack drivers but the 243 shoots about an inch. Ive bedded, floated and done the trigger to 2-1/4lbs my best load is 100 grain partitions and 48.5 H1000. a nice load at 2950fps with very good velocity consistancy. but I am dissapointed that I cant get better than an inch. at 1/2 I ussually stop looking I am thinking about    trying Barnes 85gr triples any powder sugestions would be apreciated. also I seem to do much better with 22 cal and under, is there any tricks to shooting bigger calibers as accurately as the little guys? By the way these were all new in the box so wear and corrosion are not a factor.

I've had a bunch of .243 rifles over the years, and they all seemed to be happy with a 75gr. Sierra hollowpoint over 38gr. of IMR 4895. The current one...a '72-vintage 700 BDL...is probably the most accurate sporter that I've ever owned and it thrives on that particular load.

My .243 likes 41.5 grains of IMR 4350 with the 100 grain partitions. I was happy with the .75" three shot groups so I didn't even play with the cartridge Overall length. The chronographed muzzle velocity of this load is 2872 fps.

41 grains of IMR 4064 works well with the 70 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips with Winchester WLR primers or CCI 200 primers. This load gives me a muzzle velocity of 3223 fps with the WLR primers (chronograohed) and 3256 fps with the CCI200 primers. I didn't need to play with the cartridge OAL with this load either. This is my varmint load.
