Author Topic: CZ-550 or Rem 798? (Read 16489 times)

My next rifle is a .30-06 for general use and a possible Africa trip for plains game. I want a Mauser "claw rifle" and have narrowed down to a CZ-550 or the new Remington 798 Mauser (basically a Mark X with Remington work). Price is comparable. What say you? Which one should I choose? All opinions appreciated. Thanks! Rev

Me I would go with the CZ

all the way.

Out of all the CZ's I have seen shot and know of owned by friends and fellow Deer stalkers not once have I heard a complaint about poor acuracy

I personally have two a ZKK 601 in .308 and a Model No2 in .22 Rimfire. Both older models now it's true but they shoot so well. Heck the old club I belonged to brought a Model 527 Fox in .223 for genreal use and loan to new memember. I shot it more than once before it got scoped and shooting at 200 yards using old GI pick up ammo some dated 1969 it was holding the Bull mostly of a 200 NRA target. OK some didn't go off.

These cartridges which I still have some of han to be cleaned to get the corrosion and crud off before they would chamber. I spung them in a drill whilst cleaning them with wire wool. I cannot think of a more severe test of accuracy .................... mixed headstamps and years and ammo that had lain outside in mud and wet for god knows how long then to be cleaned and shot. It's not only a testerment to the CZ 527 but the ammo makers. WCC,TW and LC are the head stamps.

I have never owned the Remington version of the Mauser but I have had the CZ 550 American in .308 and it was a tack driver, to say the least. I traded it because it was a little heavy for my surgically repaired spine but I really wish I had it back. I will be buying another one, if only to use from a blind. The fit and finish of the rifle were great, at least for me. The stock even came from the ractory with some really nice figured Turkish walnut. The CZ is the BRNO company of old and they've been making this style rifle for eons. Remington has just gotten started with this version. CZ is also making rifles here in America and from what all I've read, they are very serious about their quality. If I were going to go to The Dark Continent, I'd take the one that's got some history with this type of action over the Remington. Especially now, since I have read many threads and posts that are giving less than stellar reviews about Remington quality. You certainly won't have any quality issues with the CZ.

No doubt in my mind, CZ is the choice!

When Charles Daly was the importer of the Zastava mausers, there were numerous quality issues which could not be resolved. Just because the actions now have Remmington stamped on them, and a poorly designed laminate stock, doesn't make me confident that the quality is any better than it was before.

I am unsatisfied with my CZ 550 American in .270 Winchester. It is accurate enough, but it is too heavy, it doesn't feed smoothly, and it doesn't hold a zero. Our two other CZ rifles also have feeding difficulties. I replaced the CZ with a different brand that holds a zero, has the right weight, and feeds reliably. The CZ Safari rifles are popular and I have seen no messages of dissatisfaction with them. Try posting at www.accuratereloading.com and see what you get back on their Africa forums.

One more vote for the CZ I own a 527 in ruger 204 it is WELL better than MOA out to 200 yds. I will add a couple more CZ as soon as my budget alows.

Don't currently own a Remington/Zastava, but have in the past. Had to send the Charles Daly version back because it kept crushing brass (feeding issues). I have 3 CZ 550 safari rifles and they all shoot like lasers. That should tell you what I think. Neither gun is made in America, so I would recommend CZ hands down.

Cz all the way! I have three CZ rifles and all three will punch one hole groups at 100 yards. They are a little heavy, maybe that is one of the reasons they are so scary accurate. They have a REAL barrel attached to them.
My CZ 550 American in 9.3x62 was my first CZ. What a shooter! My second CZ is a 550 FS in 6.5X55. I wasn't really expecting sub MOA with a full stock, boy was I wrong. Another one hole shooter. My third CZ is a neat little 527 in 221 Fireball. Again one hole shooter.
This target is my 12 year old son shooting a five shot group with my 221 Fireball at 100 yards.

This is my 9.3X62 at 100 yards.

None of my Remingtons will shoot this good consistently.

Question for you CZ users with '06 length rifles (i.e. .270, 30-06, 9.2x62). Is the Magazine long enough to load rounds to OAL equal to .375 H&H rounds? The Howa and Remington 30-06 length rifles have this capability, as did the most recent m-70's.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

the magazine length from end to end is 3.46 inches long. I just got through measuring mine for another poster. Tom Purdom

I haven't seen a 798 in person, but have handled several of the charles daly mausers, which is the same gun as the 798 without the remington stock. The charles daly weren't very smooth, and the mark x mauser action can be plenty smooth as my interarms withworth is very smooth. I would get the CZ and forget all about the 798.

Hmmm one poster who has had 3 problem CZ's

I am wondering the chances of that being the rifles? And I notice that Questor claims it refuse to hold zero

Hmm I am now o=wondering if someone has been improving the rifle by "Bedding" it as I see so many say they do "as a matter of course

My honest feeling is that we have a problem owner not a problem rifle. Also I cannot see from my personal view that the CZ rifle is too heavy and wonder why Questor would buy a rifle which they felt was too heavy? Seems very odd to me.

I would liken it to myself buying a Rem 700 when I distinctly and even intensly dislike them and then complain about the rifle

In regards to the note posted by k3yston3, I bought a customized Whitworth off a good friend in Nov. The gun and my handloads shoot sub MOA 5 shot groups and the stock fits great. My problem is that since shooting roughly 40 rounds over the course of 3 weekends in Nov, and after giving the gun a good cleaning over Christmas, the gun has experienced a zero shift of 9inches right and 6 inches down AT 25 YARDS! What happened? All I can think of is a humidity change (from my buddy's basement for 8 years, to my dry gun cabinet) or scope problem.

1) Can I ask, does your Whitworth have a free floated barrel?

2) Has anyone experienced such a shift (and was it scope induced, or other)?

My Whitworth does have a free floated barrel, but it is bedded into a McMillian. Did you take the gun apart to clean it? I would guess that it is torqued differently than before if you did. I would consider having it glass bedded, but only after playing with mounting bolt torque and testing with a known good scope.

and I would start looking at what you did when cleaning it. Back to basics and go through everything.

Checking the mounts, bases and how the action is bedded into the stock. Something is obviously vry wrong and the scope itself must also be checked. Good luck with it

Thanks for the quick responses (I am a first timer to this site, and am impressed with the quality of the discussion threads)

I agree, something is very wrong, I am just baffled.

The strange things about this are 1) I didn't take the gun apart, only used a Bore guide with a nylon brush and Barnes Bore cleaner, 2) The gun still groups as tight as it did back in November.

The real problem is that my friend doesn't recall the Customizer, nor does he have the paper work, so I don't know if the barrel was originally free floated. I didn't check this when I bought the gun. All I know is, that now it is not free floated. There is contact about 1 inch from the front of the stock, and seems to have contact on the right side to about 2/3's of the way around the barrel.

I would have thought that if humidity change would have caused the stock to shrink in my safe with desiccant, that any new barrel pressure would not only cause a shift in impact but would stand a good chance at increasing group size as well. I didn't want to take the gun apart until I have a chance to shoot it some more and see if I get any more changes.

It is the continuing good groups that causes me to question something internal to the scope? Again I would think that any looseness in mounts or screws would degrade the group size as well as impact. Any one ever have a scope have such a shift?

I'll expand this a bit. I am looking for a heavy(ish) 243 and have looked at the sako, styer Rem (I do not like!!) how would the 550 stack up against these?

I'd put the CZ 550 up against any production gun, period. The 550 has a set trigger, too. Just push the trigger forward until you hear/feel a click and you have a trigger with very little pull weight. My particular experience was that the CZ was one, if not THE most accurate gun I'd ever owned.
