.410 in .444??
« on: August 29, 2006, 10:33:41 AM »
I'm currently trying to buy a Winchester Timber Carbine in .444.

Can anyone tell me if a .410 shell can be fire from it? I've also heard that a .410 shell can be fired from a 45-70. Is that true?

Thanks in advance. ???

I was thinking the same thing a while back but I think someone talked me out of it.  I know there are some handguns chambered for the 45 Colt/410 ga and I know the 410 fits into the 444 chamber but I don't think if feeds through the action - I think the rifle would have be loaded one round at a time and I don't know what kind of accuracy you would get from a rifled bore and pellets.  Mikey.

I was just asking becasue it would be nice to load a single .410 round in and bust a fools hen while elk hunting. That provides some good eating in camp! The shell doesn't need to cycle fully, just fire and extract.

Yes you can shoot 410 shells in your 444!
I have only fired the 2 1/2 inch in mine, haven't tried the 3 in.
They will fire and they will extract!
They would be very effective on the "fool hens", I know you can sometimes get pretty close!
The case will swell considerably more in the 444 chamber than it would in a 410 chamber, so, in my opinion, they're throw-away's!
As stated by Mikey, they won't work through the action! Single shot only!

Whenever I use my 444 for deer hunting, I usually carry a few 410 shells!
I know they are good to 10-15 yards on grouse!  That's the farthest I've shot!

Instead of makin noise, carry a simple lightweight sling shot in your back pocket with a few 00 buck pellets. Last year, I did notice that the forrest grouse were a little bit more skittish than before.

I shoot my 45 Colt /410 contender pistol with rifling in the barrel and I get a very small group at 15 yds with 3" shells.

Only difference you have is that you have a choke tube for your 45/410 and once installed, it's supposed to stop the spiral motion that the rifling imparts on the wad and shot!

I do have a chock that screws into the barrel that helps the group to be small. It still has rifling in it thats a b.... to clean out with all that lead in the shot shell. I know its not as big as the .444 also.

It doesn't seem to me like you should have much of a leading problem!
The shot is contained in a wad cup!

Well I do. I have a time getting the lead out of the rifling. I thought that the shot cup would help prevent this. I not really sure there is a cup in 410 shells with all the lead that gets into my rifling. Maybe that was over looked with the box I shot. You know the old saying (censored word) happens.

I ended up shooting a 45 Colt bullet threw it to get the lead out.
