Cleaning Rods which one's the best?

I have a new anschutz 1712 .22, and a .270 churchill and want to get cleaning rods.
I have heard carbon rods are best but what brands? and with what jags? brushes? etc.
Whats your choice?

Dewey makes a good rod but a little pricey. I use it on my good rifles.  You can pick up a one piece coated rod at Walmart for about 5 or 6 bucks but its too short for some rifles.  I use the Walmart rod on my 24" Encore barrels as they don't need a long rod.  I like the nylon bristle brushes but that is just a personal preference.   The pointed jags keep the patches centered and they are less likely(than a slotted jag) to make contact with the barrel.  You will need two rods as the 22 rod will be limber and probably bow enough to hit the lands on the .270 when tightly patched.   When I go to the range, I often just take one .22 rod and use it on everything but don't tightly patch the larger calibers.  I just run a solvent patch thru them and wait until I get home to scrub the bores.   I have some old Military rifles that were cleaned until the muzzles are egg shaped. I think too much cleaning can be as bad as too little.    Good shooting to you.

I purchased two Tipton carbon rods a couple of years ago, one to fit my .25-06 and another to fit my .30-06.  For cleaning a rifle, they are the best things that I have found since sliced bread.  You can find them at www.MidwayUsa.com, and I think that MidsouthShootersSupply now carries them. 

Nice thing about them is that gunk doesn't imbed in them, and they can't scratch your barrel like stainless steel (i.e. ProShot) would.

I have Dewey rods. I like them. If I find something I like better I will buy it when I need another rod. The plastic coating on the Dewey rods does wear down after a while.

I like Dewey Rods and I also use  Sinclairs Jags (www.sinclairintl.com) and  I also use their bore brushes pretty reasonable when you get doz at a time.  Well good luck.

Dewey cleaning rods are coated steel rods.tipton's are carbon fiber.I like them better.the handles are nicer and the rod turns easy with the grooves in the barrel.
for your .22 you might just want to use a bore snake.I would e-mail anschutz and ask them what they recomend.

I have used those cheap multiple piece cleaning rod kits - just junk AND THEY CAN DAMAGE YOUR MUZZLE!

Now I use Dewey.  Heck, I just bought another one yesterday!

I'm with Superstitious Coues on this one.  I've got 2 Tipton rods.  Won't scratch like stainless steel might and won't embed crud in 'em like a coated rod could.  Long enough to reach through my barrel with a bore guide in it and spins as smooth as silk on ball bearings in the handle.  Not the cheapest rod around, but worth the price.

I have always used Aluminium full lenght rods. Never had any problems using them.

I switched over to the Tipton rods awhile back, I have the heavy one that I use in my 45-70 BPCR, it holds up very well to the ugly stuff in there, and the smaller one I have is for .223 and up. I need to order on for the .17 soon, but they are top notch rods.

Get a good bore guide, not a universal, I beleive the guide is atleast as important as the rod I have both types. If you get a carbon rod which are very nice get the shortest one you can because they are much more flexible than steel and the have a long brass sleeve on the end so copper solvents will affect them over time. The Dewey are great they have great bearings and are very good quality and stiff. I had delrin end caps made for my bore guides and I have used a dewey rod for 10 years and there is no wearing of the plastic coating. and I clean about 3 guns 4 times aweek. If you use a good bore gyide you could use about anything with no damage. I would really avoid the multi piece rods and stainless. Just my thoughts though, good luck

Have just ordered tipton carbon rods (have heard nearly all good reports on them) thanks for all the great advice
