FA Custom Grips
« on: August 27, 2006, 09:38:37 PM »
Yup, I'm a newbie to this forum, but it reads like an interesting place.  I've got a Mod 83 .454 which I carry as my bear gun when I'm  out and about here in Alaska.  I haven't had to use it yet on a Yogi, but it's sure given me a lot of peace of mind for several years.  The factory grips are beautiful but they are just too dang small for my hands, so I've had a set of rubber Pachmeyrs on it for some time. And they work fine, and fit me a lot better, and I shoot OK w/ them, but HEY, at the end of the day they are still just "rubber Pachmeyers", and this fine gun deserves a lot better.  What I REALLY want are oversized, finger-grooved, custom wood grips !!  I know....a lot of "purists" are groaning, but gol-darn-it, that's what I WANT !!  So finally to the question:  Do you know of a good source of such grips ??  I've talked to Herrett's and they say they can do it, and that's the way I'm leaning right now,  but if you know of someone else you think I should talk to, please let me know.  And if you have any info re: using finger-grooved grips on a FA .454, and do they work OK, I'd love to hear about that too.  (Gosh....this post got a lot longer than I expected....thanx for listening.....)

I like the look of the wood FA grips on my Model 83.  I wear a padded glove when I shoot not so much for the recoil, but to take up space in the "cup" of the palm area. I need it even more for the Model 97! Gene

AK Guy, I talked to Herretts a month or two ago and they told me they don't do anything with FA's. Maybe we talked to different folks there.
Another one you might look at is Eagle Grips, they do have the FA listed on their website, and I think they mention a finger groove set.
I would like to get a set of factory grips for my FA 83. If you would be willing to send your factory grips to me I could try them on my FA and if they fit close enough I'd certainly be willing to partially fund your custom grips. Or I could send you a deposit until we find out if they fit.
If you are interested, please e-mail me.
Thanks
Joe

Uncle Joe....Yeah, Herrett's said they could / would do what I wanted, i.e. finger grooved grips for the FA Mod 83.  Hmmmm.... Maybe I'll get it in writing before I committ.   Re: Eagle Grips, I see they have FA grips on their site, but they are basically "factory replicas", and I had called them and they said they don't do any "finger-grooved" grips for the FA.    Thanx very much for your offer on my factory FA grips, but I really don't want to part w/ them, even though I'm not using them.  I guess I'll pass them on to the heirs, and let them use them, or not....... But thanx for the input......  (PS....what grips do you have on your FA 83, and why do you want to change ? )

If you can figure out how to locate them, BluMagnum would do a good job ... would probably just need your gripframe ... I hear he has a fella helping him now.  I have lost his contact information.

I have the Pachmayr's on mine now and I would like to try the wood grips for a while to see if I can be more consistent at 200 yards. The only problem is the price, send it to Freedom along with $205 bucks and they will fit a set. Wish I had known or realized that when I ordered it, I'd have gotten both and saved $100. I would dearly love to have a set of finger groove wood grips for it. They would have to be readily offered to the public (catalog item) to be IHMSA legal for the revolver category.
Thanks for the fast answer on the grips. I can understand why you want to hang on to them.

I tried the Micarta grips from my model 83 22LR pistol on the 41 and they just don't fit right. They go on ok but the outside contour does not match the grip frame.

I really don't understand how the best made revolver in the world has to be so different as to have to have the grips fitted at the factory. Why can't they make the grip frames exactly the same. If they would, then everyone would make grips for them. OH, I think I just answered my own question.
Thanks
Joe

I don't know if he does those sort of grips, but you might check with Scott Kolar of SK Custom grips. I've heard alot of good things about his grips from people he's done work for and he has some beautiful materials to work with.
