« on: August 26, 2006, 09:44:42 AM »
Has anyone used Adams &Bennett barrels i am curious as to how they are. Was toying with the idea of rebarreling a remington 700 from 30/06 to 35 Whelen. And if not can you guys reccommend a barrel manufacturer. Thanks tanoose

Have you considered reboring? You'll have the same barrel, just with a bigger hole in it. Saves money on bluing and contouring. Fits you present stock just fine, also.  ;)

I have 2 Adams & Bennett barrels, one in 270win and the other in 30.06.  I mounted them on '98 Mauser actions.  They shoot fine, sub MOA.  I bought mine in the white so I had to blue them and finish ream the chamber to headspace correctly.  For my purpose which was to build a good accurate hunting rifle, they work fine.  My only criticism, both are in F34 contour and they are a bit heavier than some of my other rifles.

What is the total cost (est.) on a rebarrel? I was considering a 1:7.5 twist for my 243. The Smith quoted $800+ to rebarrel. My ? is what is going $$ to rebarrel in the same cal/ with minor refinements.

On a top grade barrel runs around $300 then about $150/$200 to fit and chamber.  Does the $800 include any action work or extra cost for the 1/7.5 barrel twist.  You might want to look at Douglass,Hart,Pac-Nor,Shilen and Kreiger and see what they charge to install a barrel as they give a better price on working on the action since they can sell a package deal.  Since the twist you are looking at is more for the LVD bullets are you having it throated for those type bullets.  IMHO I'd get a match grade barrel if I was plan on building a 243 with a 1/7,1/7.5 or 1/8 twist barrel.  Well good luck.

I've got an A&B on my Savage.  It's a .35 Whelen and after about a 100-round break in I'm really liking it.

I do not have a scope for this gun - rather a William Guide Peep sight (tight budget), so I can't brag about sub-MOA.  However, I can attest that I've seen some of the best 100-yard groups I've ever made with this gun/barrel.

So far it really likes the 200 grain Remmington bulk bullets over a stout charge of RL-15.

Mostly I've been shooting 280 grain paper-patched bullets and it's been satisfactory so far.  I think I've got the powder loads found - from here I suspect it's just perfecting my bullet making to equal the accuracy of the 200 grain Rems.  Also perhaps playing with seating depth or get a Lee Factory Crimp die.

Just finished re-barreling with a 35 Whelen A&B barrel on a savage action.  I have shot less than a box and it is grouping 1 - 1.25 inch three shot groups.  Hope it will stay that good are less the more I shoot it.

I have a Mauser 98 with an 338/06 A&B barrel. Shoots great, 5 shoots into an inch at 100 yd. If you decide to rebarrel contact http://www.skaggsgunsmithing.com/.  Mark has done 2 rifles for me. He does quality work at reseanble prices.
