Cleaning solvents, who uses what?
« on: August 24, 2006, 11:29:08 AM »
I am looking to switch from Hoppes #9 to something that works better at removing copper, etc and general gun cleaning. I use # 9 only because I had so much of it from years ago. I really think that some of the newer products have to work better. Thought of Butch's, Sweets and Barnes, but have no experince with any.

Also, what does everyone use for lubrication and rust protection. I just ordered some Kroil from Midway to try it out.

Thanks!!

you have to be carefull with sweets and barnes.can not stay in the barrel are chamber area more then a couple minutes are it will etch the metal.Tipton just came out with a bore cleaner.I saw where test were done with other top shelf bore cleaners and tipton won hands down.I have bought a couple bottles, but have not tried it as yet.Shooters choice is one of the better ones I use.I have one bottle that I mix 25% kroil and 75% shooters choice.as cleaning takes place I use straight shooters choice. If you have a gun that really fouls start out with black powder gell and scrub well with a bore brush.then on to regular cleaning.Butch's is good also as is bore tech products.I use and enjoy thier patch hog..
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

Shooters Choice and Break Free CLP for general cleaning and oil/rust prevention.  Barnes CR-10 for copper removal, but I really like the new Outers Foaming Bore Cleaner for this.  It takes the same amount of time as CR-10, but less effort.

Carbon and skin oils: Hoppe's #9 (If I want the above, but don't feel like smelling kerosene: Hoppe's Elite)

Lead: Lewis lead remover and Shooter's Choice lead remover

Copper: 3% Ammonia, 10% Industrial if it's bad (corrosive!)

Oiling: RemOil on the outside, Kroil in the barrel and chamber(s) (I oil my guns for storage)

Wipe Out or any of the foaming bore cleaners if you don't want to do any brushing, Walmart carries Outers for $6.88, works almost as good as Wipe Out, either will git er done!! Foam the bore, leave it alone overnight, I just lay the rifle on one side for a few hours, then turn it over on the other side the rest of the cycle, this helps the cleaner to clean both sides of the bore, it tends to settle in one side after a while and doesn't clean the opposite side as well resulting in needing more applications. A heavily fouled bore will probably take more than one application, normal cleanings take just one application.

I read that Montana Extreme was the best stuff that's ever been offered, I tried it on a couple rifles, went back the foaming bore cleaners, they still work best, specially if you don't like spending a lot of time running patches down the bore!!

WipeOut states on the can that it won't work on lead, but it does work on any alloys in the lead and makes removing it very easy in comparison to other lead remover concoctions I've used.

The best rust preventative I've ever used is Eezox, been using it for about 15yrs, no complaints.

There was a article in Varmint Hunter that stated that Sweets was effective because it had a soap solution in it, and this helped loosen the copper. Then after a few minutes "slowly" push a patch down that has been treated with Hydrogen Peroxide. This creates a foam and removes the copper. I am now a believer that copper should be treated on every cleaning, where I was doing it every 100 rds.

Better than Hoppes no 9?  Really?

I've been using Hoppes for a long, long time.........but will, on occasion use something with ammonia for copper fouling.......Current copper fouling choice of the day is shooters choice.........

For my general cleaning I use a mixture of Shooters Choice and Kroil.  I mix 75% SC and 25% Kroil.  I run two wet patches first and then use a brass brush for 21 strokes and follow with three wet patches.  I then dry the bore out with about five dry patches followed by an oil patch and then dry patch.  If there is copper fouling present I use Sweets after my normal cleaning process.  I run a wet patch through the barrel followed by a nylon brush with Sweets for 20 to 25 strokes and then another wet patch.  I let the Sweets sit in the barrel 10 to 15 minutes and patch it out.  I will then follow up with an oil patch followed by a dry patch.
Good Shooting,
George

The main stay of my cleaning solvents has been Hoppe`s #9, been using it for
better than 50 years.   Never had a bore or action problem due to residue so
old #9 is my solvent of choice. That`s not to say there aren`t newer ones that
may or may not do a better job but for me and what i do......i`m happy.

For copper removal I've used the following:

  Barnes CR10
  Butch's Bore Shine
  Montana Extreme
  Shooter's Choice Copper Remover

Of the above, I feel Shooters Choice Cu Remover works best.  Gun tests reviewed solvents and found Montana Extreme 50BMG to be the best.  I haven't tried it.  The ads in the Midway catalog tout their Tipton brand solvent as the best, but they didn't test it against and Montana Extreme products or Shooters Choice Copper remover.  Plus, at $14.99 per 4oz, it's the priciest.

I read the 6mmBR web site article on bore cleaning and plan on getting some of the Wipe-Out foaming bore cleaner, but I still need something that will clean the bore in a lot less than 2 hours if I need to clean while at the range or on a prairie dog town.

I use Shooters Choise copper remover and Barns CR10. Either one does a great job.

Another one that works Exstreamly well is 50 B.M.G. special formula, super strength
Copper Remover, But you can't leave it in to long. I mean get the job done and remove it.

i use shooters choice and gunslick aerosol cleaner in my rifles. i found the gunslick on sale at gander mountain and the back of the can said it was good for copper fouling so i decided to try it, and it actually worked very well.  i read the article in the link above and i think i am going to get some of the wipe out for copper fouling, along with some nylon brushes.

I bought some Butch's Bore shine and some Kroil. I use the Butch's first, then follow with the Kroil. Seems to work pretty well. Oh, don't use Butch's and a brass jag...what was I thinkin'? A lul in brain activity for that moment, I guess. I was wondering why every patch came out blue! I didn't think I shot that much...lol

I have tried many different cleaning products and oils.  For what it's worth I went back to Hoppes #9.  I run a wet patch in the barrel  at the range and let it soak on the way home from the range or for as long as you want (it will not eat up your barrel) and is a short term rust inhibitor.  If alot of rounds were fired run a few patches thru the barrel and then a nylon brush saturated with #9 several times.  Take dog for a walk and finish with some dry patches.  Lots of people use bronze brushes, but if you are getting rid of copper you are also disolving you bronze brush.  I am amazed at how much copper #9 removes if you give it some time.  I also use Kroil and J-B bore paste when needed .  For metal protection I used to use Birchwood-Casey Sheath oil.  I have recently switched to a product called EEZ-OX (www.eezox.com)? and am very pleased with it.  Some of these new fast action cleaners can screw up a barrel as fast as they can clean one.

Butch's followed by CLP for rust protection for me.
I have used Sweets, but only on severe fouling, and very carefully.

I know praire dog hunters who shoot dogs all day(1000+ rounds), and then plug the bore of their rifle and fill with Sweets 7.62, overnight. Have you ever seen Sweets cause problems in a bore?

Cleaning Solvents, Who Uses What?

:o  Holy smokes!  Leave Sweets 7.62 in a gun barrel overnight?  The instructions on my bottle clearly say no more than 15 minutes - Maximum!  (The stuff contains ammonia.)

I got rid of Hoppe’s #9 many years ago, and haven’t looked back since!  Today I use Ballistol Oil, Iosso, ‘Bore Cleaner’ and, ‘Gun Brite’, and Flitz metal polish.

http://www.ballistol.com/

http://www.iosso.com/

http://www.flitz-polish.com/products.asp?product_id=MFL23

First, I start with a couple of cotton patches with Ballistol.  Then, I dry out the bore and follow with Iosso bore paste.  Sometimes I’ll let the Iosso paste sit in the bore for 5 or 10 minutes before scrubbing it out with a Hoppe’s Tynex brush.  It doesn’t take long before the lands and grooves are clearly revealed.  I’ll follow-up with a coating of either Flitz polish or Iosso, ‘Gun Brite’.

My bores are always immaculately clean, very shiny, and protected against moisture for extended periods of time without any leftover oily residue.   ;)

Not sure if it has been mentioned, but I have had good success with GM Top Engine Cleaner.  You can pick the stuff up at the parts counter of any GM dealership, and sells for around $7 per 15oz (I think).  It comes in an aerosol and liquid form, and works pretty well removing carbon build up.  Not too sure about copper fouling, though.

There's a caution in the 6mmBR article on using the GM cleaner, use it carefully, or just get one of the cleaners that have the same cleaning chemical without the dangerous solvents as mentioned in the article I posted on Aug 25th.
