Krylon on a Stevens stock
« on: August 21, 2006, 08:24:03 PM »
Has anybody ever used the inexpensive Krylon camo aerosol paint on a Stevens grey plastic stock? I hate to spend $50 for Duracoat on a Stevens rifle even though I know it will last. I bought the Stevens mod 200 to avoid wasting cash.

I read about several folks, I think on this board, that have had success with the Krylon Fusion? paint, its the paint specifically designed for plastics.  Then, just use the camo paint of your choice.  I remember they suggested lightly roughly the surface with some sand paper prior to painting.  When it does scratch off, just touch it up.  Yes, I agree, a cheap fix.  I'm in the same boat, just got a Stevens 25-06, and wondering if I should do the paint thing.  It may stay "grey" this season as I'm running out of time.

Why not tape off the outside and bedding area of the stock and test an area inside the barrel channel with different methods?  W or W/O sanding, Etc..
Just my 2 cents

Heck......just plan on touching it up a bit when it starts looking bad.......

Rough up the surface with 400 grit paper....

Wipe the stock down good with mineral spirits and/ or acetone.

Spray a primer compatable with the paint.

Add the paint.

No paint last forever......that's why they keep selling the stuff.......

It's a drag......I'm going to have to paint the house soon.....not looking forward to that!

Will the house be in Fusion or Camo?

Fusion rubbed off within a week for me (yes, I let it cure for a week between coating and shooting).  I was pretty disappointed.  I ended up using Gunscrubber to remove it (another strike to me).  I used Duplicolor spray on bedliner at $7/can.  It is only black but it is textured and easy to hold when wet.  Feels funny on the cheek, but it seems pretty durable.  That gray factory stock is godawful.

I've tried the "made for plastic" paint without much luck.  I have also tried the Krylon "Ultra flat" camo paint and can't complain.  But this was on a carbon fiber stock.

I really don't understand the significance of a camo painted RIFLE stock.  It's not like the deer is going to see your gun at 50+ yards away.  Do you think that deer are going to say "Hey, is that a rifle that hunter is carrying?  Wow, looks like he did a good paint job on that stock." :D

I can understand camo paint for Bows because you are hunting in EXTREMELY close range.  The same thing goes for hunting gobblers with shotguns because they have AWESOME eyesight.  To even a lesser extent I can understand camo paint for muzzleloaders because you may get those really close shots too.

So, camo paint on long range rifles?  I don't get it.  Unless, of course, you want to do it just because it looks cool...Kinda like some hunters who camo paint their trucks, install camo seat covers, and have camo patterned furniture at the camp house.  ;)

Maybe he's a varmint or prediator hunter and the varmint or preditator see's well also?  A crow seems to have pretty good vision.......

Or, maybe the latest version of "super deer" (the kind non magnum-non premium bullets bounce off of), now see in color.....

You yourself, Zachary, said in a previous post, the fit and finish of a Savage/Stevens leaves a lot to be desired so maybe he thinks it'll look better camo'ed.

Actually, I've been thinking about painting my savage stock camo as well...........

Ever seen some of the movie star's without make up?  Maybe my Savage can be "pretty" and shoot good too! ;D

Tried the Krylon Fusion spray then the camo colors. Looks nice and I didnt even do a good job. This was the gray Steven stock so it is a good 1st time stock to practice on. If it dont work it dont matter. It aint like you ruined a walnut, hand engraved work of art. I did rough up the stock good with sandpaper 1st. I didn't try  to make it look pretty; I tried to make it look anything but gray.

Well I had several gray Stevens stocks and was suffering from gray-out so I Kryloned one of'em to get some relief. Accuracy? You bet. The .223 shot 1/2" @ 100yds right out the box. How much closer can you get to the bullseye? Unfortunately in sc there isn't alot of game to hunt that a .223 is suited for. We have few varmints. If we could just have a slight prarie dog infestation I'd be alot happier.

I put Krylon flat black camo on my Vanguard synthetic stock. Looked great - very non reflective. Only trouble is, a strong copper solvent (Barnes CR 10, probably also Sweets) will remove Krylon if you touch the stock with your hand that has touched a wet cleaning patch. So, I'm looking to remove the Krylon that is left. CR10 will work for sure but does anyone know of a cheaper finish remover that works well?

I have a Savage Mod. 11 Synthetic that I camo'd with the Krylon Ultra Flat Camo paint.  I hunt mostly coyotes, so shiny is not an option.  The Savage stock looked pretty bad.  I wet sanded the stock.  Taped off the barrel channel.  Primed with Krylon gray primer.  base coat was three coats of Krylon Khaki camo paint, then I built on that.  It turned out really good.  I also painted the barrel, but not the action or scope.  I tape the scope.  Paint has been on for a couple of years now and still looks great.
