Why is the j-lock not liked by gun people ,what is pro and con on this issue?
I enjoy collecting guns, swaping and staying up on all the newest models. I deer, quail, squirrel and rabbit hunt.

Aesthetics seems to be the principle reason altho there are those that feel any sort of Rem bashing makes them appear knowledgable.  I have several Rems with them and several without them.  I don't have a problem with either.  I can see, if one had small children or even uninformed adults in the home, where the locks could be an plus.  Since I have neither, its a moot point with me.  I just put the thing on unlock and forget it.  I do keep one of the keys on my key ring.
For those that can't abide them, there is a cheap and easy after-market change out.

You want the firing pin spring to come straight back and forward with no bends etc for some reason the J-Lock firing pin spring looks like a snake and can rub against the inside of the bolt body and it will drag alittle.  Long before the J-Lock alot of match shooter would change out the factory spring and fining pin to get better lock time
Tubbs makes firing pin kits which includes a new spring for Rem,Ruger,Savage,Win 70 and Wby rifles.  When Rem came out with the J-Lock for anyone wanting to build a custom they would just change out the whole assembly.  You can get Brownells catalog and they will explain about lock time and benefits and these products and they were out long before Rem came out with the J-Lock.  My new custom 300 mag and 300wby  build on Rem actions I got Gre-Tan firing pin assembly's for both bolts, sako extractor and new Hart bolt handles.   I guess some feel it's bashing to replace a part instead of improving on something.

if you go to www.6mmbr.com you'll see in their 'gun of the week' archives a lot of great rifles.   one of the most accurate rifles out there was built upon a 'standard-issue' j-lock that turned out to be amazingly accurate.   i wish i could remember which week it was, but you 'll see the Rem' actions in that archive used on a number of top-notch shooters.

the j-lock itself is not a problem to accuracy, apparently.   i don't see where it is of much concern.

take care,

Gaaaads.I knew I should not have read this post.I really did not want to know any more about those stupid locks on the bolt and I have a remington custom shop in 8mm mag that has one.works fine, I just have a blind eye to it when I look at the rifle. But noooow I am going to have to call brownells and have the shroud sent to me and replace the one with the lock.who knows spring n firin pin ta boot.
my huntin rifle is safe from confiscation only while my battle rifle protects it.

I don't think an over-long spring is unique to the J-lock Rems, nor the Remingtons in general.  I took a mauser bolt apart the other day and it had a spring long enought to keep the screen door shut.
While having a spring that doesn't touch the bolt body MAY be a small facet in the ultra accuracy game, it does reduce the pin strike.  No large problem when bench shooting.  However, with a hunting arm, as with a battle weapon, absolute reliability is a first and most important requirement.  I can handle a bit of spring rub to achieve that.
As I said, its a cheap fix if the aestethics bother you.    ;)

Are we talking about the Safety feature that Remington put on the bolts of some rifles ?

I have only seen one of those J (Gun) Lock Safetys, and I don't think much of it.
