I think too much is made of recoil. After all, recoil is 85% mental. If a new shooter has been exposed to "propaganda" about "kick" then they will be afraid of the rifle. On the other hand, if the new shooter is brought forward gradually, with an understanding of recoil, much trepedation can be ovevecome. One can simulate recoil by grasping the barrel and gently pushing it back
If this was my spouse, I would bundlel her up with heavy clothing, maybe a towel for the shoulder, and above all, eye and hearing protection. Moreover, in the beginning, I would not let her shoot more than 3 shot strings, with a substantial wait between strings. I think you will be suprised, as most women have a greater tolerance for recoil than we think.
When I was in the Military, we had female shooters on our team. They handled the M-1 rifle and the 30-06 cartridge quite well.
