The rifle was made before Savage came out with the short action model 10. So, in the case of the 223, you actually have a long action rifle, but there's a spacer so that it uses a 223-length internal magazine and there's an extension on the bolt's baffle so that the bolt only travels rearward enough for the 223 cartridge.

Personally, I wouldn't give that asking price though, as there's several places where you can get a new Savage with AccuTrigger for around $350. If the seller would drop the price another $50, then it might be worth it.

I would agree. The rifle will need a new trigger, which is easy to install, but not cheap. Savage rifles, pre accu trigger, had BAD triggers. Good shooters and the varmint/target rifles were and are excellent. That 223 should be a good shooter with some tuning. I'd pay $250, but no more.

you can do a whole lot better than that!  You can get a new .223 in a short action for less than $300 in the stevens 200 and if I recall correctly I have seen them on gunbroker as the model 10 with accutrigger for under $300 or right around that.

It will work, but if you want a .223, getone with an action more in line with than cartridge.  No sense trying to get a 223 to feed out of the same action they use for a 300 wm.

i looked today at sportsmans warehouse and the stevens 200 (which is just a pre acutrigger 10 or 110 series) and it was 259 for the new rifle. you could buy that and put a new tasco scope on it for the same price. however, i would not use a tasco scope, at a minimum i would go with a bushnell banner

I wouldn't call them BAD but they are not as good as some.  Mine is adjustable and is very light, breaks clean.  They were adjustable on older Savages.

I paid $250 for mine used and that was high for a used Savage.

I agree with the rest of the posts, gut a new Stevens.
