300/221 in a bolt-action
« on: August 19, 2006, 01:56:39 AM »
Guys,
Anyone here shooting a 300/221 Fireball (aka 300Whisper) in a bolt-actioned rifle? I'm interested in building one on a Rem700 action for 150m varminting with the 110gr V-Max and 125gr Nolser BT, as well as medium-weight cast-bullet use and as a mild "boy's rifle". Anyone have any experience in this area??
Cheers...

If you did one want to make sure it was throated for the bullets you mention alot of the AR 15 etc chamber for the Whisper would shoot up to 220 GR MK.  You should get around 2500fps with the 110gr V-Max and 2300fps with the 125gr BT Noslers and alot of good barrel now in 30 cal with 15/16/17/18 twist.  I looked at doing a Whisperl but if you look at the width of the 221 case and bullet dia you real don't have much in the way of shoulders IMHO so I did a 7.62x39 with a 30cal barrel.  Haven't chronographed it yet but should be around 30-30 velocity.  Another problem would be barrel lenght most of the AR 15 used a 16" barrel and the pistol 10".  I think Cor-Bon still makes 300 Whisper ammo might want to check www.corbon.com  Well good luck

Thanks roper,
I'm working through the throat and twist issue at the moment ... trying to finalise what I actually want from this rifle. I'm not prepared to go as slow as the 1:17" and 1:18" seen on the 30BRs as I'd like to shoot medium weight (150-180gr) cast projectiles and possibly a 150gr jacketed. I'm considering a 1:12" or just going with the 1:8" as a default in a 20" to 22" barrel. Interesting you mentioned the 7.62x39 ... a tight chamber .308 version on a Rem700 is another project of mine for the future.
Cheers...
