444 Marlin 1:38 Twist, Best Ammo Choice???
« on: August 18, 2006, 04:05:34 AM »
I have a H&R Ultra in 444 with 22" barrel, I plan to hunt only whitetail deer and wild hogs in the Southern states. What would be my best factory loaded choice(s) in ammo?

Will the 270 gr. Buffalo Bore out perform-- the 265 gr. Hornady and 240 gr. Remington?

I am really only interested in accuracy and the load that will drop the less, giving me the longest killing range?

I feel the heavier loads are for larger game than I would be using the rifle for, and also the 1:38 twist is not supposed to stabilize the over 300 gr. loads well.

I would appreciate any input. What are the ballistics on the 270 gr. Buffalo Bore; and is this a good accurate choice for deer in my 22" barrel

IC:  the Remington factory 240 gn and the Hornaday 265 gn Light Magnums shoot very well in rifles with that twist rate.  I have heard the 270s are also pretty good and some of the 300 grainers are supposed to be awesome performers.  But for what you are hunting either the Remington or the Hornaday will do ya fine.

If you want to get into reloading you will be in with some most excellent company and will have availble a ton of advice on loading up the 444.  Good Luck.  HTH. Mikey.
