remington extractors
« on: August 12, 2006, 12:20:06 PM »
I guess remington extractors are great.but,I found out you can have the bolt machined and a sako extractor installed to really beef up reliability..
any one have this done to their rifle bolt??and what do you think of it.?

I have also heard of this conversion, but I have used Remington bolt action rifles for the past 25 years on a regular basis and have never had an extractor fail. If it ain't broke.....

I bought in on the Remington extractor bashing because it is a cheap POS but it works. I had a Rem 760 for several years and now a 7600 and they just keep on working. I had a gunsmith tell me the only ones he preplaced were on rifles that fired max loads all the time. How good this info is I can't say.

When I have a 700 rebarreled I normally have the extractor replaced it's more as a custom feature and I've even had the ejector pin moved.    I took a Rem 700 280 and made it into a 300wby so when you open the bolt face or if you go from a 30-06 bolt face down to a 223 bolt face you have to intsall a Sako type extractor.  I've even heard of them taking a Savage bolt head and using them on a 700 bolt and there is one outfit that is making oversized (bolt body) Rem bolts and they can be ordered either with a rem extractor or a Sako.  Hope this answers your questions.

I like the M700's and have many. I've had few problems but have replaced a few of the extractors. usually they work quite well.. Machining for an M16 or a sako extractor works well if the work is done by a mchinist who knows his job. The only problem is that the remingtons use the recessed bolt head as a safety measyre in the case of a gas leak or pierced primer. The rest of the action is not well designed to handle escaping gas. If you install an extractor that provides a hole in the bolt head for gas to escape its not taken care of. The result can be a face full of high pressure gas and metal particles. I've seen several of these done but do not reccomend them. If you want to do some thing to make your rifles unique there are other safer directions..

I understand what ye all be sayin. But doing the conversion to a sako extractor being unsafe??????I don't think so.why do just about all other extractors look like a sako???
I bought a remington rifle awhile back.a custom 700 in .338-06 the bolt was fluted,Holland tactical bolt handle, and a sako extractor machined into the bolt.It is sooooo nice looking.sets things apart from the rest of the pack.and it operates like a swiss watch(are they still a good thing to compare stuff to???)
several gunsmiths recomended the winchest action with the claw extractor said it was great for reliability and the better choice for dangerous game.I don't think I like the looks of that extra piece of metal riding along the out side of the bolt.

I have been using the AR-15 [m-16] or Howa extractors for some time now and like them better than the Sako. as they are held in place with a retaining /pivot pin and thus are not going to come out at all.
