77mkII feeding problem!
« on: August 10, 2006, 03:43:58 PM »
I have a 77mkII sporter in .308.  I recently changed from the factory laminate stock to a factory new synthetic stock.  Now the gun WILL NOT FEED!  It wond feed at all!  When you put more than one round in the magazine, the follower either jams down and doesnt push up, or cocks to the side and lets the rounds fall under it.  The stock fit was very tight, but it went in ok and looks to have a real nice fit, but i cant for the life of me figure out this feeding problem.  The folower and or spring is not backwards or anything.  Should i send this in to ruger?  I purchased the synthetic stock from them and with their recomendation.

Joe:  If nothing else than a stock change is seriously altering your rifle's abilit to feed , then you have more problems than your going to be able to shake a stick at.  First, make sure that the follower is installed properly (I know, but it happens to the best of us).  Secondly, make sure that the follower spring is fully inserted into the floor plate, and Thirdly, make sure that the magazine box is properly flush against the bottom of the action (that problem occurs a bunch more often than you can imagine).  If those three things don't rectify the problem, then your rifle probably wasn't right when it left the manufcturing plant in Conn.

Take the stock off and check the magazine for proper fit with the new stock. That's the only thing I can think of. You can get the magazine in a bind sometimes.
