6.5x55 at the range
« on: August 08, 2006, 03:50:36 PM »
I shot my T3 Tikka at a very nice range in Minnesota.  What a joy to shoot this caliber at both 100yds and 200yds.  Very manageable recoil and awesome accuracy!!  I am not a great shooter but .75 at a 100 yds. with Hornady 140grs. is about as good as it will get for me.  This gun really likes those cartridges.  Had the whole range to myself and walked back and forth to the targets for some excercise.  I just had a wonderful outdoor afternoon with a great caliber and a affordable box of shells!!!!!!  Buckfever

That's my favorite recreation and that's my favorite caliber.  I reload for my Swedes and Encore. 120 gr. Sierras kick even less.  Been to hot to shoot heah in Arkinsaw lately.   I usally have the gravel pit up the road to myself but have to take my own target frames (for sale signs)

I was considering putting a scout scope on one of my matching numbered Swedes when I found one already sporterized.  So I traded a Walmart Vanguard .270 for my Kimber 6.5.  I put an old Weaver V9 on it and got 1-1.5" with my reloads.   I thought I could shrink the groups by bedding the cheap Ramline stock.  When I took the barrel out, it had already been bedded and had a Timmey trigger.  Guess all I need to do is work up the right load.  Someone had even installed a Limbsaver pad.   It is a pleasure to shoot.  I hope you guys find one of these jewels.

Took the T3 6.5x55 to the range for the first time a few days ago. After about 5 groups of 3 shots at 100 yds with a 2-3" spread, I cleaned and got a little clover leaf.  ;D

I was using Federal Power-Shok 140's. I'm very pleased, to say the least. I am switching scopes though - sending back the Elite 3200 and going to a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40. To me it looked like adjustments in elevation were affecting windage...

Not sure if we can still post photos an a message. I wanted to post the target.

Take Care

I called my gunsmith friend Jack, and he said he had one of the Kimbers  left.
His name is Jack Metz and he lives in Yoncalla, Oregon.

Sigma, that's great shooting, and a great call on the scope switch.  2 of my T-3's have Conquest's and they are fantastic.

Way back in `77 or so I got a Win 70 in the shop with termites in the stock. Traded a 788 in 243 for it. Put on a McGowan XX CM barrel [#1] in 6.5x55 and a kevlar stock that was casred off the Featherweight 70 stock with less drop . Put a Leupold 1-4 scope on it and, to this day, it`ll outshoot me and about everyone else around. Can`t tell you how many Axis deer and such have gone to PETA Heaven. One time on the KMCAS range I lay on a mat at the 200 yd mark and shot 129 Hornadys into a 1.3 group. This was under less than comfortable circumstances as I was coming off back surgery then. One amazing calibre!!

Guys,

Can we still post pictures? Not sure.

Another thing - the rings supplied with the T3 will give you serious scope pinch if you tighten them down a bit. I would not recommend them at all unless you don't mind scope damage. I let the gun shop install and bore sight my Elite 3200 and when I took it off I discovered pretty serious tooth marks on the tube.  >:(

I went to Sako Optilocks, low. A bit pricey and they still mount a tad high, but they're a heck of a lot better than the ones that the rifle comes with. This time around I installed the scope myself.

Now I've got a T3 Lite Stainless 6.5x55 with a Zeiss Conquest 3-9x40 (matt black) on top. The 4" eye relief and the brightness/clarity is fantastic.  I think I'm in love.  ;)

Can't wait for the deer opener.  ;D

Regards

Can one of you folks with a Tikka Lite actually weigh it?
I am wanting to get the absolute lightest 20" barrel 6.5 I can lay my hands on at a reasonable price.
Speaking of which anyone have real experience with the Colt Light rifle that was made briefly a few years ago?
