Remington's 300 gr jacketed hollow point in 45/70 Gov't

  Has anyone use the Remington 300 gr jacketed hollow point in 45/70 Gov't on deer sized game and how does it perform.Wanted to use the hornady leverevolution but looks like a pretty good waiting period on getting some.

I picked up a box a few years ago after purchasing a new Marlin with the "Ballard" rifleing.  I shot only one deer with the load-an average sized doe.  Unfortunately, I was too close (less than 50').  In my haste, I missed tucking the shot behind the shoulder and got the shoulder instead.  My poor marksmanship combined with the rather soft slug and close range ruined a great deal of venison.  I concluded that for my purposes (mostly "woods hunting" with average shots less than 50 yards) the Remington 300 is just too soft.  (Then again, if I hadn't botched the shot (hitting the shoulder) the round may not have acted like an RPG.)

That's only one experience with one deer.  Perhaps others can shed a more positive light.  (On the plus side, the load has mild recoil and very good accuracy with my Marlin).

Joel used to shoot that bullet, but he had the same problem. I'd choose the 300gr Speer Unicore if you want an inexpensive bullet, and it you want a do anything 300gr, the Nosler PP would be at the top of my list, it will expand at velocities down to 800fps and won't go to pieces at any velocity you can shoot it at in a .45-70.

   Oh this is the Remington 300gr hollow point 45/70 factory load. I just ordered a couple box's from Midwayusa

From a 24" barrel, their velocity is 1810fps, not far off of Joel's data, so I would expect it to perform the same, destructive on some hits, it's a lightly constructed bullet, can't expect miracles from it on close range hits.

   Yeah i saw that sounds like they tear the meat up pretty good when you hit bone with it.well just have make sure where i place my shots .wished i could have found some of the new hornady bullets but what i see theres at least a two month wait

Never tried the remington but the winchester 300 's are super accurate in my handi rifle and my friend has taken a couple of deer with it in has marlin 1895  i would reccommend you also try the winchesters

I use the Rem 300 hp loaded to 2000fps in my handi. If you do a heart/lung shot you'll be fine. I have shot several there and it's bang, flop. My brother shot a running buck at about 75 yards hitting the last rib and it basically gutted the deer for us.

If you're wanting to slow the expansion a little, fill the hollow point with J-B Weld.

Hummmm that sounds like a good idea smokinjoe i never thought about putting JB weld in the hollow point.Well Like 45/70 fan said if i place my shot right it shouldn't tear up to much meat .I should have done a little bit more research before i bought the remington's
