WEAVER MOUNT DESTROYED ON SMITH 500
« on: July 27, 2006, 11:56:51 AM »
WELL I HAVE SHOT A LOT OF STUFF IN MY LIFE AND NEVER SEEN ANY THING LIKE IT.  I WAS USING THE WEAVER MOUNT SYSTEM  ON MY 500.  THE SCREWS WERE TIGHTENED DOWN AND LOCK TIGHTED. THE RECOIL FROM THIS GUN TOOK MY BURRIS 2-7 AND FROM THE RECOIL   ELONGATED THE SCREW HOLES. IT LIETERALLY STRECHED THE ALUMINUM WHERE THE SCREW HOLES WERE. IT TORE THE BOTTOM PIECE THAT HOLDS IT ON AWAY. THIS WAS CRAZY. MY GUN SMITH IS MAKING ME  A MOUNT OUT OF SOLID STEEL. THIS SHOULD SOLVE THE PROBLEM.
LUCK when preperation meets opportunity.

If anyone decides to use a scope on the 500 Mag, get a good steel mount. If a red-dot is used you can get away with an aluminum mount.

I use Ultra dot on mine, over 2000 rounds of 500 Mags,  and it is still working.  ;D

I can second the Weigand product. I have the aluminum one on a 29-5 and it fits the gun very well. The stainless mount should fit the gun and stay put.

I have a steel mount on my S&W 500 with a 2X Leupold scope on it and it has never come loose. I would guess that I put about 600 to 700 rounds thru it. I got it from S&W not long after I bought that gun.

With heavy recoiling guns you need to use the lightest scope you can.....No Burris variables.

I have one of the PC 500 Hunters with the built in Weaver base on the barrel shroud. I use Warne QD mounts to hold a Weaver 2X scope. Works great. I did have to put in a higher front sight, though.
