Hello all...
« on: July 26, 2006, 08:43:40 AM »
I'm happy to be here, I am a gun nut and a friend of mine sent me a link to this board, I hope to learn alot from the pros, I might have a few questions...

First of all this is me...

That is a NEF Suvivor in a 308cal. I just ordered the .50cal ML barrel for it, and I was wondering how much longer it might take to get it, it was shipped to the factory for fitting on the 6th of July, I might seem a little impatent ;D But I just want to shoot it ::)  Can any one tell me if the plastic primer caps are re-useable, or are they just a one time deal  ???

More great hunting Pic's to come ;D
Thanks for the help, and thanks for the link Dave ;)

Welcome, aboard and you find a lot of useful info here!!!!! I have used my Huntsman for three years and been really impressed. I use the primer carriers and I have about 15 shots on some of them.

mangulator, Thanks, I have 2 bags of the carriers comeing with the new .50cal ML. I was not sure if they were a one shot deal or not. I just sold my CVA 209mag.  It was my starter ML. I just got into the season here in Mn. about 4 years ago, and my brother told me to just buy a cheap one to start with to see if I was going to like it. One big problem with the CVA was the sights are plastic >:( I have no idea if the NEF 50cal. has plastic sights or not, if so I plan to get them replaced before I fire the first shot. It can be real cold here for the ML deer season, I've hunted when it was -20 degrees here, and one small branch on the plastic sight will end the day or even a week in the feild while you find a new one, so I hope it comes with steel open sights. No optics allowed here in mn.

Welcome Captkev,
The barrel I got from Nef had a plastic front site. I took the front site and rear site off as well as the ramrod ferrule and put a weaver scope with leopold quick release rings and filled the area where the ferrule was with a lyman sight slot blank and use a conventional forearm. I ordered the 25 acp breechplug and works great. I love nefs and this forum. You should be getting your barrel soon, it took about 6 weeks for mine. Hang in there.

Oh by the way, I shoot 245 gr Barnes HP bullets with the MMP sabots (black HPH 24) with triple 7 powder. Nice shooter.

Welcome,

You will like the Huntsman, they are very accurate and not fussy like most muzzleloaders. Your turn around time will be quicker if H&R/NEF has the barrel on hand at the time you ordered. A guy I know ordered a stainless about 4 months ago or so and they were out of barrels at that time, his took a couple months because he had to wait for them to get their barels from GM. The carriers are reusable up to 20 times per H&R/NEF, but I have one that has 65 shots through it and would still work, but is severly washed out. I was just trying to see how long one would last with moderate loads. Don't really know how long one would last with Magnum (3 pellet) loads. I also have 3 carriers that only lasted 1 shot while shooting BlackMag'3 with 460 grain conicals.

I too purchased the .25 ACP breech plug conversion for mine and that is what I have been using for the last year.

Thanks for the help guys. I'll think about the .25 ACP idea, But what about the sites, anyone have any sugestions on how to obtain some good steel sites? or a peep? anything out there that will adapt to the new barrel? I wish I had seen this board before I ordered it now, I might just send it back if I can't change the sites. No scopes allowed here in Mn. for hunting.

So if I do keep the barrel, and decide to use it with the plastic sites, can anyone tell me what I should start out with as far as powder and projectile? I used 295gr. (? I think)  Powerbelts with the Clean Burn 150gr. (3 pellets) in my CVA, I would like to switch to the pyrodex or the 777 pellets. I know my limitations, and I'm not much good past 75 yards with open sites but I'd like to see a 2"-3" group at the very least.

Everyones tips and help is very much apreciated, thank you all.

P.S. I'll be calling them when I get up in the A.M. to see if there is a way that they can custom fit some good steel sites on it at the factory, wish me luck. :-[

captkev, when you get that new barrel and start your load experimenting just finger tighten that breach plug and after every fifth shot break break the breach plug loose. Use a good breach plug grease. I also like two 50 grain pyrodex pellets and 250 grain shock-wave bullets. I have also topped my Huntsman with 1X4 power circle X scope by Bushnell and love it.

I am just setting up my Huntsman and have decided on a Simmons Pro Diamond scope 1.5-5  32mm as the exact same one on my Omega has been great. The scope is very bright and clean and I really like the diamond as it makes quick shots a lot easier to line up. My vision is not great (especially the right eye) and the diamond helps. Sportsmans Guide has them on sale for $99 or $89 if you are a club member. All other sources seem to be at about $140 or more. This scope at less than $100 is a super deal!!

I need Help... PLEASE :'(
I just got off the phone with NEF, I was told that I am out of luck :'( They got rid of the steel sites because they cost too much. They said that they sold the guns in the past with them, but had no idea where to get me a set. Can anyone help me find a set of the TRUE Iron sites, maybe you know of someone that put a scope on a older modle and has a set that they dont need...? Or maybe you know someone that has made the same modifications...?

Once again, Minnesota law don't allow me to use a scope durring the ML season. :'(

You may want to address this issue on the NEF/H&R Centerfire Rifles Forum, there is a lot of knowlege on that forum concerning rifle sights and such... or wait awhile and someone will come up with an idea. You might want to look at NEF/H&R catalog and try a set of peep sights...

Frist off welcome to the borad. The iron sites H&R use to use where willams fire sites. you can go to there web site or brownwells should have them. the HuntsMan is a 100Gr deal. ive had good luck with 295 power belts and 90Gr of priodex 3-30 grain pellets. Good luck let us know how things work out Rich

i just looked at my huntsman barrel and it looks like the front and rear sight are each held on with one screw.   If the OD of the barrel is a generic size then some one like Williams should make a set of sights that will fit.  Look in the midway catalog or just call Williams.

You guys are the best! Thanks for the tips, and keep them comeing.

I just got off the phone with Williams, and it sound like it's not going to be a big deal, I just have to wait for the barrel, then measure the diamiter and figure out the ramp, the Tech at Williams sugested a Peep style site, and so have a few others, Any of you have any input on this or personal preferance...? I'll keep you all posted with the progress of this project and post pic's when I get it back. I'll try all of the possable bullet and powder combinations to get the best groups at 50 yards. then if I feel confident enough I'll do some 75 and 100 yard groups and show everyone how this project turns out. My hopes are for venison in the freezer with one nice clean shot, and no busted sites. Thank you all again.

captkev,

Before you get yourself all worked up over the sights, they ARE NOT PLASTIC. The sights are made of aluminum alloy by Williams Gun SIght and are their Fire Sights. They are not the cheap plastic that came on them 2 or 3 years ago.

You can also get the H&R WGRS peep sight from H&R Customer Service for way less than you will find it aywhere else. This sight will screw right into the rear two scope base holes.

If you want to replace the fiber optic part of the sights, you could just buy the blade for the rear ramp and a front post OR just take black paint and blacken out the fiber optics.

I use the Williams H&R WGRS (peep sight) on mine along with the Williams Fire Sights, good sights that work great. I think you will like them.

Or you may be able to find someone here in our classified that will sell a WGRS for even less, I just sold one to cpj for $20 shipped, several of us have upgraded sights on our BCs and have the WGRS left over.

Captkev,

Just went an got my invoice from H&R, the H&R WGRS was $18 last year at this time. The H&R item number is R03019, description is SIGHT, RECEIVER REAR. If you call them, I'm sure they would ad it in with your barrel when it is shipped back. You might want a couple other things such as a spare ramrod, only $8 for mine last year. The reason I ordered a spare is I hunted elk last year with my Huntsman in Colorado, sure don't want to loose/break that and not have a spare on a hunt like that.

Quick has a good idea too, might be able to get yourself a good deal on one from someone here, mine is not for sale. ;D

All great ideas and great info as well, I might just sit tight and see what they look like now that I'm told that they are not plastic, the ones on my old CVA were plastic and no alloy what so ever, I'm saveing all the links and info for future referance, Thanks a bunch guys, This is truly one of the best sites I know of now, I have a few favorite fishing forums, but this is the best shooters forum I have seen.  Thanks again to Mishigander for the link... OOOP's thats RipOne on ths Board. I'm going to start stock pileing ammo and powder now so when it comes, I can make the choice to keep the factory sites or have the peep shipped over night.

Your welcome Tim, just wanted the guys to know that H&R only charges $18, Williams gets $35.95 for the SAME sight. Quite a savings, if you ask me. ;)

RipOne/Michigander,

That is the Williams FP-H&R WITH TARGET KNOBS $59.95 through H&R, Williams is getting $81.50. These are bot 2005 prices, so they may be a little higher this year. The Williams FP-H&R WITH TARGET KNOBS part # from H&R is R03193, if anyone is interestes. Williams also offers it without the target knobs WILLIAMS FP-H&R, but they are getting $69.95, 2005 price.

Tim, just went and read the updated FAQ, H&R also sells the new FIRE-SIGHTS that fit the Huntsman barrels that came with the plastic sights. I will list the break down below in case someone needs just a replacement part.

Just in case anyone has the older plastic sights on their Huntsman and want to upgrade to the Williams Fire-Sights, H&R has those too. I only paid $22.04 for both the front and rear set last year. Williams is getting $39.95 to $49.95 for the same sights and dont even list it for the Huntsman/Sidekick in their 2005 catalog. They might have it in their 2006 catalog, not sure. I will more than likely be stopping in to Williams Gun Sight in Davidson tomorrow, if I go on the roadtrip to Outdoor World/Bass Pro and a Muzzleloading/Black Powder Shop as planned. I will get a 2006 Catalog/Price List if I do.

H&R has the Fire Sights as a whole set, but they are broken down into the individual pieces as far as pricing. Here are the numbers and 2005 prices.

S03176 - SIGHT SCREW SHORT                                             $ 1.25

S03177 - SCREW SIGHT 6X190 WLLM                                     $ 1.25

S03178 - REAR, MUZZLELOADER BASE                                    $ 4.75

S03179 - REAR, MUZZLELOADER SLIDE                                   $ 3.30

S03180 - REAR, MUZZLELOADER BLADE                                  $ 6.54

S03198 - SIGHT, FRONT                                                       $ 4.95
                                                                                        _______
TOTAL FOR FIRE SIGHT SET (2005 PRICE)                             $ 22.04

I was too P.O.ed to post, I should have sat on the front porch waiting. I let the puppy out and came back in to start some lunch... went back to get the pup, and there was a tag on the door!!!

I called them and I got in touch with the boss at this UPS branch and said I was here all day! They will stop again today, I've got notes on the doors both front and back telling them I'm in the house ;D Drive the truck into the porch and blow the horn... I'm home and will not leave untill that gun is in my hands! I'll post some Pic's before I goto work.

Full Report   :o
First off,  Thanks for all of your help guys.

 Here she is...

All of the goodies...

Here it is with the 22" 308cal. Bull on it...

I'm going to stick with these sites and try them. Like I was told, these are NOT plastic, and seem to fit me well when I shoulder the gun...

I'm not quite sure what to think of this ram rod... ???

OPEN...

CLOSED...

They forgot to pack my carriers with it, so I had to make a call to get them on the way, but they are great people to work with over the phone. One thing I'm not too fond of is the breech plug tool. I just might drill and tap some threads into the bottom end and add a small "T" handle.

I'll get this thing to the range soon and try it out, I'm going to start with 3 30gr. pistol pellets and I have not decided on what type of bullet I'll be shooting yet, but I'll try several out before I set it in stone.

Reports and Pic's from the range will be here in the next couple of weeks
