BRNO ZG47 in 7x57 (where can i find one)
« on: July 25, 2006, 10:38:44 AM »
When i was growing up i hunted with a Brno ZG47 in 7x57. It was a beautiful little rifle that many warthogs and kudu fell to. The problem is that it's my dads and it's back home in africa.

I am wanting to build my own 7x57 now with the same action or with a M98 action. Can anyone point me in the right direction to locating one of these actions or what the best route would be with the M98. I dont know alot about custom rifles so have no clue where to begin.

I know where there is a ZG47 in 30.06. Can this action be rechambered to the 7x57 cartridge.

I am going to be using this rifle for hunting here in the states and for the odd trip back home. The most important part for me is the rifles meaning and the reminder of my childhood in Africa.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can try contacting local smiths and see what they might have in a back room waiting for someone who wants to make a new gun out of it. Most rifle-smiths have a "favorite" action that they like to use and if you find one who likes to use what you want to start with the interaction between you will be good for both of you. I learned more about what goes on with a custom gun when my smith and I talked about what I was going to use it for and what was important to me. He shared what he needed and what my choices were. We talked a lot while I was looking for an action and when it seemed I would never find one and I was getting down on myself about it he pulled an action out of the safe and said he could give it to me for a fair price. BINGO! It was only about six months later and my gun was finished.
So... go talk to a few of your local smiths and see who is interested. Then begin talking!

I am not clear if you had a coverted military rifle or it started out to be a sporting rifle.
In USA there have been many, many surplus military rifles bought cheap and sporterized. While the market is not what it once was, shotgunnews.com or buy the magazine hard copy or subscribe, or Gun List hard copy (I have much less knowledge. Been reading SSN for 20 years when Gun List got started.)  have ongoing advertising from firms with surplus M98's, parts, and whatever your budget permits. Unfortunately many of the 7x57s got rebarrelled. SARCO (and advertiser in SSN, above) at one time advertised brand new barrels for the 7x57 that were made in Germany for WW I, some country's rifles. 29 inches long. (I have no idea what your preferred length can be, but they can be shortened.) Obviously, cut rifling. Equally obvious, in USA, the "action" --so to speak-- began around the Springfield, 1903 in .30/'06. Necked to 7mm that's called the .280 Remington. (to .27, the .270 Winchester.) As good as the 7x57 is, this is a little more "heat" if you want it.
As suggested, ask around. Visit gun shows. Occassionally you will find someone with a surplus action that needs gas money and will part with it cheap. $50.? $75.? Many, many gunsmiths have things laying around and might sell them cheap, and bring them to gun shows. . My own tiny preference is the Belgium Mausers, definitely new steels,  but to each his own. You might also want to read the De Haas book, "Bolt Action Rifles of the World." LUCK, happy trails.

the brno zg47 is not a military rifle but rather a sporting rifle built by Brno. There are a variety of calibers with 3006 and 7x57 being the most popular. Only 20,000 of these rifles were built and unfortuntly they are very rare. I have a 3006 and dad has a 7x57. These rifles are arguably the best hunting rifles ever built, more so the actions.

Thanks for the help.

I have only ever seen photos of the ZG47 but I do happen to have the Meopta 3x sight for them including the mount not something you see eveyday either. As to making up a ZG look alike it's the pop up peep sight that will give the biggest headache. Re-barreling you 30-06 Zg to 7x57 is feasable but why? as you say they are fairly rare so my thoughts are leave as is and  get a slightly later ZKK action or rifle for your 7mm mauser rifle. If I had to use a 30-06 action I would seriously consider the 7x64 Brenneke instead especially with Africa on the cards  ;)

Surplus military rifle route to build one I would go for either a VZ24 or an M48 and go from there. Good luck with your search.

yea i dont plan on changing the 3006, i would be crazy to do that. As far as i know they did not come with peep sights.

here is a picture of a original brno zg47.

The only thing not original on this rifle is the recoil pad and scope
