I have one in 416 Rigby. I think is I well worth it, I had the action glassed and the barrel floated. I am getting 1 inch groups at 100 yards with it, what a great gun in my opinion.  I would pass on the Ruger #1, you can get the CZ 550 Safari Mag for just a little more.

I also have one in .416 Rigby, mine will also shoot inside 1" at 100.  This is my second CZ, and it won't be my last.  The trigger will be much more shootable than the Ruger.  I also have a #1, and I like it, choose whatever tickles your fancy.  I am willing to bet on the CZ for the accuracy honors though.

May as well get the .458 Lott that way you can shoot the .458Win mag AND THE MORE POWERFULL .458 lOTT . may I also suggest you dump the lumber it comes with in favor of a McMillan stock .with a little adjustment and polishing of action and trigger the CZ 550 is sweet hart .

Dave,

I have that rifle with the American stock.  It's taken me about a year now to develop my loads, and get comfortable with it.  Now that I have worked out the bugs with the stock splitting issue, and finally have my sights regulated to my load, I love it.

If you just want the Lott chambering, go for it, but I wouldn't shoot too many Winchester cases through it, as it will ring your chamber.  Frankly, with modern powders, the Win. mag. is quite impressive.  I am getting a consistent 2280 fps. with the Barnes 450 grn. TSX, and that is definitely Lott territory.  The rifle gives me 1 1/2" groups at 100 yds. with this load, off the bench, with open sights.  It is a handful, but it is manageable.  Offhand, it's no big deal.

CZ's, like most modern maufactured rifles, need some attention.  Considering that the purpose of these rifles is dangerous game, the action needs some slicking up, the stock definitely needs bedding and crossbolts, and you will probably need to order various heights of front sights to get it regulated, but when done with all this, you will have a world class thumper.

If you purchase this rifle, PM me with any questions I might help you with.  Good shootin'! :)

Have you ever seen a Lott chamber that has been damaged by useing .458 win mag ammo ?no one who I know ever has ,it is an old wifes tale.the chamber is too hard for it to happen .just because someones brother had a friend who heard about a guy who saw it happen to this guy in africa in 1962 is not first hand eye witness fact .I wish people would stop spreading these foolish rummors .

Buster,

I did not mean to imply that the metal of the chamber would be affected.  The result of firing Win. mag. cartridges in a Lott chamber is much the same as firing .38 Specials in a .357 mag chamber.  You get a hell for stubborn carbon ring build-up at the case mouth, only worse.

That's not a wive's tale, just common sense!!!

I have both the ruger #1 and CZ 550 safari in .458 win mag and both shoot like lasers. I reload, however and load them with a ruger #1-strength .45-70 powder load with 300 grain hollow points (Not necessarily recommended for anyone else's gun). I would guess ths is much more pleasant to shoot than factory loads. I have never shot factory loads since they are $60-$80 a box and would most likely kick like mules. Both guns are fun to shoot. Both weigh approximately the same. I personally do not think there is any better shooting than throwing big hunks of lead down range and have them hit where you are aiming. I know this doesn't help you make a decision, but I don't think you can go wrong with either rifle. Just a matter of personal preference.
