What are the tricks and tips to floating a barrel.  In the past ive used sand papaer and a broom handle, but there has to be a better more precise way.  What are the tricks you guys use?  Im going to be doing a cz in folowing week, and would like to do as good a job as possible.

I freefloated my laminated stocked Howa a few months back and I had good success with my Dremel and the round (barrel-shaped) sanding tool.   I figured it would more or less bounce and jump along and make an uneven surface but with good control it worked surprisingly smooth and fast.  Then I finished up with something else that better fit the particular surface I was working on.   You might give it a try.

Do like I do and use a Magic Marker nstead of the broom handle?

You mean there's something other than a wooden dowel and sandpaper?  Dang, what'll they think of next.

If all you're talking about is sanding out the barrel channel the perfect "tool" is a deep socket of the appropriate size with the sand paper wrapped snuggly around it.

Better idea is a true bedding job; AcraGlas from Brownells (or other similar products).

I have free floated barrels by taping the bottom of the barrel with a moderate thickness tape placed evenly on the bottom and sides of the barrel, then bed the barrel and action.   When the tape is removed, the action is bedded and the barrel free floated.  Remember to bed about 2"s in front of the action.

Any advantages to bedding the action and entire barrel?  The main drawback that occurs to me is that even a synthetic stock can move with changes in temperature, and this could affect point of impact.

I made some washers out of a plastic ID CARD I got from a video rental place, sat them on the posts between the action and the stock,  it worked a treat.  I can impress the guys at the range by sliding a 5 dollar bill freely between the barrel and stock all the way to the front screw

I just hog out the barrel channel with a dremel tool then three layers of tape on the barrel back to just in front of the reciever. Little Micro-Bed and there it is. I bed in the reciever first tho.

I'm with Johnny Revolver..  I stole my Idea from the Finns, who used little metal shims between the action and stock.. 'specialy on the model 39s..  they shoot like target rifles.   I used some copper flashing metal, about  twenty five thousandths of an inch thick, and cut out shims, one front, one back, drilled holes for the trigger guard screws to go through.  It brought the model 70 Winchester down from about 2 inches to well under an inch for three shot groups.. (338 win mag) and I use a dollar bill, (not a fiver) to run down the barrel trying for float..  just cause I'm cheep..    squeak when I walk..   Les
