New 226
« on: July 14, 2006, 06:31:02 AM »
A new stainless 226 in .40 S&W found it's way home with me last night.  I won't get to wring it out until the weekend, but am looking forward to trying it.  The middle son is half way through the police academy, I'm giving thought allowing him part of his inheritance if he gets through it.  I'm almost hoping he doesen't like it, in that case I guess I'd just have to take it back.
I guess I'll just tell him that I found someone who had one he could use to see if he liked it.  This way he won't be under any pressure to say that he likes it, even if he doesen't.  Wish us luck.
Will post a review afterward.

Wise choice indeed. Either way, someone will be very happy with it when the dust settles and it finds a permanent home :)

Well, the wringing out got cut a little short, since he's only home on weekends, his wife and son thought that they should be allowed part of his time, so we only put 250 flawless rounds through it after cleaning the cosmoline out.
He's been carrying a Glock 23 and had left it in the school armory over the weekend so he didn't get to do a side by side comparison but it wasn't really necessary.  I guess his reaction was more descriptive than any words could have explained.  First magazine was 10 quick into a B-27 target from 25 yards.  7 in the center one cutting the line and the other two just out side of the line.  Second mag strong hand, third weak hand.  One round went out of the coke bottle from the weak hand. Fourth magazine was at the little 2x3" target in the upper corner, all rounds at least touching.
By this time, he was grinning so big that he couldn't wipe it off, looking at the gun and a consistant stream of comments like "I thought there would be more recoil, this doesen't seem to kick at all!" (remember he's been using a 23)  "I don't know if it fits my hand better or what" "Boy!, It shoots good, doesen't it!" (Son, I don't know, you haven't let go of it yet).  He finished off the rest of the 250 practicing the drills and skills being taught at the acadamy.
I told him that I'd clean it, that he could go on home and play with momma and the baby.
Later in the afternoon, he shows back with a big s&*t-eating grin and some sob story that he'd stopped by the office and the Sheriff had asked him to work the County Fair and he had no weapon at home, could he use the Sig.  Since it fits the same holster as my 228, I had him covered.  I then told him that if he graduated it was his, if not, mine.  I think I may have lost my new pistol.  He left the house wiping off the fingerprints with the tail of his uniform shirt.
I hope that, like my grandson, I'm allowed to play with it some.  I'll report back after a more serious session.

I think I've read this thread three or four times now.
The P226ST in .40 has made a believer out of me. I don't do much speed shooting, mostly slow fire at the local club. I shoot better off hand with my Sig .40 than I do with my Glock 17L longslide or my Ruger Blackhawk .357. I put the rubber Hogue finger groove grips on it. Fits like a custom glove.
Last trip to the range I was plinking at some 4X4 wood chunks and bowling pins at 50-55 yards and connecting at least 1/3 of the time.
I put a deposit down on a 9mm Navy model, can't wait to shoot bullseyes with that one.

Well, the son did his day qual Friday, he was disappointed with his performance, he only got a 94 out of 100, his comment "Dad, there were three shots that I remember that I KNEW I should have stopped squeezing but had gotten caught up in the fact that it was a Qualification, the other three, I guess I just missed".  He'd invited a classmate that hadn't done well over yesterday afternoon for a bit more practice: His comment after shooting the Sig  "I don't shoot as bad as I thought!! Your gun really feel nice and shoots good, you want to trade it for a Glock".
I'm beginning to think that this particular Sig will never be mine.

I have a grandson in a Sheriff's Academy class in a major California county. In 2001 I bought a P229 with both .40 S&W and .357 Sig barrels. I have told him the gun is his if he graduates AND after I am done with it. I just had my 83rd birthday and expect to be around at least a little bit longer..................that is............. in case he doesn't arrange for me to get a cup of hemlock!!

In the meantime I'm casting for both calibers and shooting it almost daily when the weather is good.

The lad's dad gave me a Sig Mosquito for my most recent birthday. Cute, handy little gun. It is persnickity about what kind of ammo I use. So far I have tried Federal, Winchester SuperX, and CCI MiniMag. Only the CCI works well. The others fail to eject, get stovepipe jams, etc. for the first three or four out of the clip. After those are fired the remaining six or seven function normally. My son gets it back when I'm done with it.

I haven't started using cast in the Sig's YET, how do the cast bullets do?  What bullet are you using? Powder?

I use LBT molds exclusively. I have a 9mm 140 grain mold and a 9mm 160 grain mold and use them in the P229 .357 Sig. I also use the 140 grain 9mm bullet in a Ruger P89 in 9mm Luger.  I have a 180 grain .40 S&W mold and use bullets from that when I'm using the .40 S&W barrel in the P229. I use a moderate load of AA#7 in all of them. I won't tell you what the weight is but rest assured that they are not max. If I wanted a Super Duper Max Magnum Monster I would try to find one, but I'm not going to try to make such a monster out of a standard pistol round. I use these moderately loaded cast loads for plinking, and I load the gun with factory loads for personal protection.
