As you can see by my "handle" I'm a diciple of the "scout concept" which calls for an overall length of 39" and an overall weight unloaded of 7 lbs 12 oz (7 lbs optimal). In order to make length a short length of pull (LOP) helps.
The mistakes made when choosiing LOP are:
1-Taking measurements in a T-shirt rather than full hunting cloths.
2-Taking the measurement from the wrong position. Most measurements are taken from and erect position with the spine 90 degrees to the floor. However the usual field position calls for the spiine beiing anywhere from 20 to 30 degrees forward of perpendicuar. As a test, try this: Assume a squat position, then have a friend hand you your rifle. Mount it to your shoulder from this position. If it goes up easy, the fit is OK, if not, the stock is too long.
Caveats:
1-Mount the scope as far forward as possible to avoid being hit by the eyepiece. Variable scopes gives thiis somewhat of a problem, that is why I prefer fixed power scopes.
2-Learn to shoot with the shooting thumb laid along the right side of the stock rather wrapped around the pistol grip. This will prevent your thumb banging your nose as the rifle recoils.
