How does your 452 American shoot under these conditions?
« on: July 04, 2006, 05:01:49 PM »
Hi,

I've read so many posts on accuracy they are getting old and at this point I'm not sure how the tests were run.

This would be using a stock .22 rifle without glass or pillar bedding. A forearm barrel channel slightly sanded would be ok.

So how does your rifle do under calm or nearly calm wind at 50 and/or 100 yards using the following setup...

A solid support like sandbags under the forearm and rear of the stock using a good bench. No match ammo please. Please specify what scope magnification you are using. What is the best AVERAGE group with one brand of your best shooting ammo, on different days. A couple of brands for comparison would help too.

A shooter on Rimfire central pointed out that any breeze most of us probably wouldn't suspect will move a .22 bullet.

I suspect the 452 averages 1" @50 yards using cheap ammo and around 1/2" with match.

Thanks.

I picked up another 452 the other day, it was a 17HMR American and I mounted a BSA sweet 17 3-12x40 scope on it and performed a Brookes trigger job on it. I went over to a friends house to sight it in and shoot a little bit and was just as impressed with this one as all of my others. We hung a target and lasered off our distance at 100 yards exactly and I begun sighting in. The first shot was dead center and about 6" high so I started walking it down. After I got it dialed in every shot fired was within the 1" box on the target. Now my goal wasn't to see how close I could get the buttlets to touch as MOA was all that I will ever need out of this rifle but when I have the time I will see exactly what this rifle will do.
I was shooting the Hornady 17gr amd the CCI 20gr bullets and they both perfromed great but I thuink the Horandy were a little better.

Hi BA,

Under the conditions you specify, the most recent info in my binder:

CCI Blazer (69 cents on sale) .667" @50yds, Weaver V16 set on 16x, 8x and 10x for 8 five shot and one four shot (for some reason I can't recall) groups.

Winch. Power Points  .72" @ 50yds, V16 set on 10x three five shot groups

CCI Mini Mag HP  .69" @ 50yds V16 set on 10x  four five shot groups

Winch. 37gr HP's .59" @ 50yds  V16 set on 10x  four five shot groups

Rem-Eley EPS  .4833" @ 50yds 4x Leupold RF  three five shot groups

With a crisper trigger and a little bedding workI might be able to shave things a bit.  Hope this gives you what yer lookin' fer.
Mark

Well you see the problem is not all of us have 452 American models  ::) mine is an older Model No2 made in 1965 and I have only rarely shot it at targets at 50 yards. I will try to take it along and test it out at 75 yards next time I go to the range. 75 yards is all the range is but at least I can shoot my rifles there. My No2 has a 4x M8 Compact Leupold scope on it and at 25 yards I get one ragged hole.
