BDL 700, 300 Ultra Mag Favorite Loads?
« on: July 03, 2006, 01:34:43 AM »
Hey everyone,
I have a Remington BDL 700 chambered in 300 Ulra Magnum.  I have been trying to find ammo that shoots well through it.  It can be factory ammo or a handloading recipe.  I need help finding ammo that'll shoot well in this gun.

Does anyone have certain ammo that their rifle likes better than the others?

Have you tryed any of the 200 gr. Remington Factory rounds using the sift A-Frame  in 200 gr.  That shot well in my rifle.  What kind of groups are you getting in yours?

you hit a chuck at 526 with a .300rum? The biggest round I hit a woodchuck with was a .308 using a 700 VLS in the late 80's at about 410 yards if I recall correctly. I have pics somewhere, I should scan them and post them....

Please tell me you took pics of the aftermath.

Gander says the Sendero is on its way, just a matter of time now :) Itll be my first .300rum, cant wait!

Hey VSSF,
I have loaded the 180gr scirrocco's over different powders and didn't get great results.  Did you notice a significant difference between the retumbo vs other powders?

I haven't had a chance to try it out even though I have an untouched pound of retumbo in my garage right now.  I'm looking forward to it though.  Have you found a load that works well for the Barnes Triple shocks in 180gr?  Are any of your rifles a Remington BDL?  If so what kind of accuracy do you get out of it?  By the way I love the picture!  A head shot none the less at over 500 yards.  That's an awesome shot!

Start with the bigger the better, but I'm interested in seeing every picture you have!  I have a 300 RUM and have not used it on game yet.  I'd love to see what it'll do.

VSSF, do you have any paper target pics of any long range shots? I'm assuming at 500 and 600 yards your personal load holds a tight group if youre hitting heads on a chuck :)

Im going to try your load asap when I get the SF II. Im also looking for the previous sendero model in .338rum, I still wish they offered it with this years SF II.

Also, whats the longest youve shot at paper and were happy with the outcome? Or do you zero in and hunt mostly? I'll be doing a lot of paper/jug killing from the bench 400 - 600 yards.

**Teddy...what works in one mans rifle may not work the same in another, regardless of model. Each barrel likes what it likes, what VSSFs Sendero loves to shoot doesnt mean it would fare as well in another Sendero, let alone a BDL.

I've shot a few times at paper at longer shots, had 1 +"group at 300.That load works in 3 senderos and one BDL S/S,And thats the one they recomend in Hodgdons newest loading mag. But I zero in and hunt mostly. Can ussually get em dirty or hit em first shot at 500. This is at 300yds.

Excellent, thanks for replying so promptly and posting a pic :)

Also, how is the recoil? I know perceived recoil is different for everyone, it shouldnt be all that bad coming from that rifle. I was considering sending it to JP to get their very efficient brake put on but that might limit the ranges I can shoot at. The worst recoil Ive experienced was hot .30-06 loads from the Remmy 700 Mountain Rifle I had years ago. I got a flinch from that thing which took a while to get rid of.

I settled on almost exactly the same load for my 180gr Scirroco's  but with 1/2 gr more than you (98.5gr Retumbo) Fed 215 primers which gives 3880fps out of my 26" barreled Rem 700 LSS.

My only other load that I have settled on is 200gr A-Frames, 92grs RL25 and Fed 215 primers which gives and average of 3200fps.

The recoil from the 300RUM isn't too bad to me (6-4 300lbs) but my buddy shoots the same gun no problem and he's 5-8 and 160. Kindof all in the trigger puller. My brothers 375 isn't too bad off hand BUT,off a rest is not too much fun.

if you can install the brake, excellent. If not, I meant this JP...

:)

VSSF...Im 6ft 185lbs, but like I mentioned earlier, since the mountain rifle beat my shoulder to hell, Im a tad sensitive about recoil. I do a lot of shooting from the bench so its always an issue in the back of my mind. I'll have to get used 2 it though. I wish all rifles kicked like a .308 in a heavy rig, but thats just not reality is it :(

As to the recoil, I was suprised. The 300rum shooting 180 sciroccos had less recoil than my 7mmrum shooting 150 sciroccos. Both are rem. senderos.

Guys on other boards are reporting the best accuracy out of the 300rums using 200accubonds at around 3150-3200fps. Most are using H-1000, RL25, and retumbo.

I've heard the same thing so I tend to believe it. Ive never shot a 7mm(any variation of 7mm) that didn't kick like a freakin mule. My dads 70's BDL 7mm mag instilled fear into me at an early age when it gave me a nice case of scope eye. That beast kicked harder than my 700 .30-06 mountain rifle(another mule, lol). I do a LOT of shooting from the bench and those light rifles are just not my thing. I'd like to try a 7mm mag in a 700 Police and see how she shoots/feels, thats on my list of things to do.

A guy from another forum is getting velocities around 3,150 with a 210 Berger and getting excellent accuracy(out of his new Sendero SF II mind you). So many loads to tinker with...Im losing my miiiiind!

Gentlemen,
I don't want to distract from the original intent of this post, but since recoil goes hand in hand with this topic I thought I'd share my experience.  I finally had my gunsmith put a limbsaver "grind to fit" recoil pad on my rifle.  Guys, I can't say enough about what a difference this has made in my shooting experience with this rifle!  I was developing a flinch and now it's gone.  This rifle would leave me soar days afterwards before the limbsaver was on and now it's pleasant to shoot the thing.  I can't say enough about the limbsaver recoils pads, they work!  You all owe it to yourselves to get one of these recoil pads put on rifle, I'm glad I did.  I'm in the process of putting them on every rifle I have from here on out.
