245 vs 220
« on: July 01, 2006, 07:11:44 AM »
:-D The gun show is coming up very soon and I want to purchase a new Sig in 45 ACP. I am looking at the P245 and the P220. One seems to be a carry gun that is about 1" shorter with an extra mag that fits like the 220 grip. I have shot the 220 and love it. Is there a big difference between the 245 and the 220. Has anyone shot the 245? Need some help here with this choice because no one rents the 245in my town. What are the pro's and con's between the 245 and the 220. Please help a new soon to be Sig ower.

:D I haven't shot the 245, but comparing the two I didn't find a dimes worth of difference other than the shorter grip.

Suggestion.  Go to your local gun shop and see if you can find the name of someone who owns one.  Contact them and see if it is possible to fire their gun.  Lots of folks will allow you to fire their guns if you don't come off like a weird-O, or crook.

In my opinion, either choice will be a good choice, but I would look at sources other than gun shows, they tend to be a little on the high side.

When it comes to Sigs, I'm a "Johnny One Note" in that I own only one- a P245.  I picked it up new last March.  Great gun!  For what its worth, the P245 has the same length barrel/slide as the new P220 Carry (viz. 3.9").  That's roughly a half inch shorter than the standard P220 barrel/slide.  The P245 grip (with the standard 6 round mag.) is also a half an inch shorter than either the P220 or P220 Carry, unless, as you observed, one uses the extended 8 round magazine.

My P245 will shoot right with my Kimber Compact Custom, so far as accuracy is concerned (sub-2.5" 5 shot groups off the bench from 25 yards).  I like it because it's adaptable.  I can use the standard "short" magazine for enhanced concealment or the extended 8 round mag. for a standard length grip/better control.

When it's all said and done, I suspect you'll be delighted whichever way you choose to jump.  The Sig platform is pretty hard to beat.

Oh!  There's one more thing you should know:  the P245 is no longer in production.  (This pistol was not a commercial success.  Many objected to the shorter grip.)  However, dealers on the Sig Forum seem to indicate that quite a few 245's remain available.  I'm really glad I found mine.

In all my years of shooting Sigs, I have yet to shoot one in a .45, admittedly that must change. The only problem is that I might walk away afterwards wanting yet another damned Sig! :-D

Until that time, I can only agree with Peter when he says...

I think the gun you want is the 220 Carry.  It has a shorter grip but the barrel is I think as long as the 220.  The grip size aids in carrying the gun if you have a carry permit.  I certainly like the older 220 guns, have read a post or two regards some recent problems with the new ones. Yet one reads of some massive failure every time you visit a gun website!  In my opinion and from my experience the 220, the Glock 21 or Glock 30 seem to work with fair regularity (statistically speaking) out of the box.  Some of the 1911 guns "statistically speaking" struggle more in this area, I have owned 6 of them the most trouble free was an old Remington Rand made in 1943 that someone gave me 2X what I paid for it....silly me I let it go....

If the 245 was discontinued, then I would recommend getting it. Otherwise, get s 220Carry.

Ghostrider_23 - I have them both; &I Love them both!
I can actually say that I've carried my P220's far longer
than the P245 simply 'cause that was my "Off Duty" gun
for several years, and I got the P245 much more recently
than my 'Ole 220...  You really cannot go wrong either way.
I have been very dissapointed as of late w/ P.D. reports
of allot of hassle's w/ the stupid "New Model Rail Guns though..."
Aditionally, (IMHO) The C.S. Department at SIG now-a-days is
for the "Birds..."  It was tragic for us to lose Tim Shea as Manager
of Customer Service to his promotion...  I still wish him the best
Non-the-less; I just am starting to get over my Rah-Rah SIG as
of late...  I'll tell the story some other time; I'm having fun right now...
Anyway, just my .02 cents worth...        ;D

I bought the Sig245 when it first came out and was surprised at its accuracy out of the box. Fantastic pistol. I bought it for a carry gun and then never carred it. I had a hard time finding a holster for it and ended up carrying my Kimber Custom instead. The Sig is like a fine Rolex watch. I also have a Sig232 and find that to be one of the best looking, accruate little carry guns around.

Good luck with your choice, you can't go wrong with either Sig.

I am now the proud owner of a 245.  I haven't received it yet, but by this time next weeek I hope to have tested it and give a report on at that time.  I purchased it used off Auctionarms, the dealer that offere it said it was 99%.  The price was fair, so I thought I wowuld give it a try.

If it performs as well as my other Sigs, I know I will be please, and it will likely be my new carry gun.

Congrats, Rockbilly!  Hope you enjoy yours as much as I do mine.  After using it for IDPA this Summer, I have total confidence in this pistol.  Puts 'em where you point 'em.  If your gun doesn't come with a couple of the 8 round mags (with the bottom spacer/grip extender), I think you'll find it worthwhile to order a couple from Sig.  They're a bit pricey (about /$50 apiece when I bought mine last Spring) but they sure add to the versatility of the gun.  I carry the six round mag in the butt for concealed carry and I carry two 8 rounders in the magazine carrier.  Works for me.

The only downside I have found in owning the P245 is the already mentioned lack of holsters made for it.
While mine goes with me whenever I leave the house I had not shot it in a while until last week.
Now  I remember why I like it so much.  ;D

I received the 245, needless to say I was impressed.  It is about an inch shorter in barrel length and grip that the 220.  My mags from the 220 fit perfect, and feed like they were made for the gun.  It has been out twice, once with military match grade ball ammo, and once with Federal JHPs.  She did quite well with both,  I could hold a three inch group at twenty-five yards.  Thats not bad for my old eyes.  I shot at a wild pig from a distance of about 125 yards, but missed him.

I think this is going to be my new carry gun.  I have two eight round mags they fit and conform to the lines of the grip, and provide a little more to hold onto.
