For an outfit, try this http://www.basspro.com/servlet/catalog.TextId?hvarTextId=72708&hvarDept=175&hvarEvent=&hvarClassCode=1&hvarSubCode=3&hvarTarget=browse  This is the Bass Pro name brand and it's the rod and reel that I have, not to mention that it's on sale for $75.  They have a lifetime waranty and cast pretty good.  I like mine, a 4wt 8'6" rod.

As for shopping on line, I don't usually, but if I do I look at Bass Pro, Cabeals, Orivs, or here http://www.thefullcreel.com/   I hope all this helps.

Divr, the rod that I suggested to you is a 4 peice.  Packs up nice and small.  I normally just take it a part and leave it in the Jeep.  She's a stout rod and has good action.  If you are going after trout, I would stick with a 4 or 5 weight rod.  If you haven't fly fished before I would probably go with a 5.  If you plan on hooking into some Bass or something, then I would suggest a 6 wt rod.  There are plent of good rods out there.

varmit, I would go with the Orvis.  I like their stuff just cannot afford it.  The problem is with a split weight rod, in my limited experiance, is it will throw one weight or the other better.  You just need to practice to see wich line it will cast better.  The good thing is that Courtland (I think anyways) has half weight lines out, that's something else to check on.  I think they run from like 3.5 wt up to like 7.5 wt, I'm not sure.  I only saw the 5.5 wt line.  Also if you are new to fly fishing, I would get a weight foward line.  It shows 5 WF-F on the box.  It does not roll cast as well as other lines, but it will help with casting.
Hope this helps both of you.

If you've got the $100, spend it all on an outfit.  Don't go with anything cheaper. Stay away from the cheap $30-60 stuff. I have a Cortland outfit I got for $100 then got a Lefty Krey rod for $160 , you do get what you pay for.

go for a cabelas sweetwater combo... they truly are a sweet rod, and at a good price, comes with everything that you need.  the drag will wear out with bigger fish, but the small combos work great.

Can't beat that Orvis set-up. Seeing as you are going to back pack it will do you well.
