Well, I missed this years dog hunt but will be looking forward to being able to attend next years event. I guess everything will be on hold until next Jan or Feb. I will be looking for input on the site abut the next shoot. We dont have dogs here in Ocala, Fl.

I'd like to join the fun also. I've only hunted PD once before as a guest on a military base many years ago. We had a blast and I took them home (Ii let them lay for about 30 minutes before I picked them up and tossed em in the cooler) and my wife cooked them for me. Fried PD is as good as squirrel but more meat & not as tough.

Lives2hunt, You don't know much about P. dogs, They carry palgue, Very Deadly,
I've always been told they taste like dirt! The guys out there will not even touch them.

Not all of them have it, but they can carry it. I am wondering if Lives2hunt is thinking of the easter groundhog? It is big and tastey, nothing like the little guys out west.

Trust me these were prarie dogs. After we shot them we let them lay & continued to shoot the others. Fleas don't stay on anything dead long and we let them lay while we kept shooting & searching ffor more cooming out of their mounds. Anyway I've heard people say that they don't like deer or dove or whatever but fried up they were very good. Not just in my opinion because I took several that were cut up to the bank I worked at and several co-workers tried and they all liked them too. They couldn't believe they were eating prarie dogs. Thats the truth and its your choice whether you believe it but it doesn't change the facts.

Marv, you shouldn't be so negative to new posters its not nice. I admit I don't know much about PDs' but I do want to so try and not put newbies or others down if you can help it. Like someone once said if you don't have anything good to say don't say anything.

I do appreciate the HELPFUL information that others have to offer.

I don't think I'd tell a 75yr old gentleman what he should and should not say, Marv's got a lot of wisdom with those years and I'd be mindful of what he's saying.

As far as shooting the critters then leaving them lay until the fleas leave, that's not likely to work since the fleas aren't gonna go far waiting for a new host. The first warm body they detect will be the next victum.

I was shooting P. Dog before most of the people here were born, I was only
giving warning On the P. dogs.
I have shot P. dogs in three States! No one at the P. Dog shoot the two years
Pick up one! I think Wes and Dano will give the same warning.
Now if some wants to save them and eat them, KEEP THEM far Away from Me.

I agree that "prevention to the exposure" is the best defense against these fleas that may carry the plague is the best medicine. So the warning given should be heeded. We should all be sure to use flea repellant anytime that we are in an area where exposure to the risk might be.. wherever the rats & PDs & ground squirrels may be found. Guess we were just "lucky" on that outing at the military base where we had been hunting. They do have drugs for the treatment but prevention is the best medicine. Some areas may not have much of a risk, the reports show that its most common in the western states, but I agree why take a chance anyway.

But they sure did taste good....guess I'll never do that again though. Thanks guys!!

What you seem to be ignoring is that the prairie dogs also get the plague. Now I dunno about you but I'd not wanna be eating one even cooked well done that had the plague. Messing with PDs other than shooting them really is not a good idea.

Not a good idea at all, to touch them al all, too much risk involved.. But also we have to remember that wherever there are rats , pd's and or ground squirrels there may be the same flea that feast off the prarie dogs and such. So lets wear the bug repelent when in the area and not pick them up after they fall.

You continue to ignore how those fleas got the plauge. THEY GOT IT FROM THE INFECTED BLOOD OF THE PD TO BEGIN WITH.

Forget the fleas for a moment, just worry that the PD you're cooking up might have it also.

I just returned from Hooker today from a dove hunt, with moderate sucess. Cold front and lots of wind and rain
friday nite and Saturday morning. Saw many PD towns with lots of critters waiting for the next big hunt. I was unable to attend this year due to family vacation plans, but would appreciate an invite to next years hunt. With all them "dogs" out there, it should be no problem burning lots of ammo. By the way, who would want to eat one of those PD's anyway? They're only good for shootin, not eatin!

I won't be touching anymore prarie dogs which means not eating them. But when hunting them or hunting on the grounds they live on, the fleas are the only other source where you could get the plague. Thats why I was warning about wearing repellent. I promise after reading all the posts I've seen about the plague & prarie dogs, I'll never touch them or eat them again. Thats why I say lucky me. Next time might not be so lucky, right?

We are Getting off the topic?? The question is not if your going to eat one of those flea bags, it's when are we going to go out to Hooker and get a chance to pop a few caps at them ? ? ? ? I sure would like to go but I need to find out far enough in advance to get the time off. There was also the First Annual Southeastern Varmint Hunters Assocation Shoot in Georgia about the same time everyone went to OK. I want to try to get to that also. I'll sigh up if any one is going to take a head count.

I doubt that Wes or Dan are in any position to start setting firm dates so far in advance. BUT the first two were early June time frame and it's likely that will be the same for next year. Trying to pin someone down on a firm date right now is not realistic.

That's cool, I wonder if they taste anything like groundhog? I used to eat them when I was younger, dad had a friend that ran a bbq place, would take them over there and toss them in the smoker for the night and have bbq groundhog the next day, now that was good eating.

I guess I just have a itchy trigger finger. I have been looking forward to attending one of these shoots for a few years. I expected that plans would not begin to show signs of life until later in the year. I'll just try to stay tuned to see how the plan unfolds.

Highly unlikely you're gonna have the dates locked in that soon. I don't recall either previous one being locked in that far in advance.

Is anyone monitoring this string? Are there any plans for a hunt this year? It is quite obvious that enough people are interested in a dog hunt that someone may want to take control and move forward with planning.

Guys you can post to this all you want and far be it from me to try to discourage that....BUT.... When Wes and Dan decide on a date they will let us know. I have no doubt they will set it up and will let us know the dates they can manage to set it up. It's NOT up to us, it's up to them. When they can make the time and when the folks who help them can make it will determine the date.

At that time one of them will start a new thread and that is where you will have to make a committment. The hunt will be limited to 25 hunters max unless it's a lot different than the first two. What I'm trying to say is that this thread won't be the one used to select those 25. Every time so far at least twice as many folks have done what you're doing here than those who actually ended up locking in for it.

Now if someone else wants to strike out on their own and set up yet another that's fine. It's been talked about both times so far but no one other than Wes and Dan have actually done the work and made it happen.
