DOES A MERCURY RECOIL REDUCER WORK AND IF SO HOW MUCH

I AM THINKING ABOUT PUTTING A MERCURY RECOIL REDUCER ON MY SMITH 500 AND SAKO THAT IS CHAMBERED IN 308 WARBIRD.  HAS ANYONE EVER HAD A MERCURY  REDUCER PLACED ON ANYTHING.  HOW EFFECTIVE WAS IT.

Now, about the mercury recoil reducer: They are as good as or better than anything else available. They work in two ways, they add mass which slows down the recoil and they add inertia in direct opposition to the recoil that you do have. To sum it up they work about twice as well as just adding weight to your gun.

Someone correct me if I am wrong, but I beleieve they are pretty much only for rifles, and wouldnt work in your smith 500

i just looked one up cause i didnt know if it was a recoil pad or what, but i seen one that snaps onto the barrell, wouldnt this mess with the sonic vibrations of the barrel or no?

ahh i'm a dork lol just looked those are for the shotgun, i've never heard of these before but i'm considering atleast the 16oz one for my savage then i can have an excuse to get a 300 win mag. anyone know how long of a hole the savage stock has? just curious ill find out when i get it of course.

Lets get this back on topic before I have to lock it.

If you can fit one of these to your gun it will work - It would also help to place weight(s) on your barrel.

I had a 458Lott built on an enfield action with a kevlar stock. It weighed a tad over 7lbs. It would knock the snot out of you. I had a mercury reducer installed and it was quite shootable. It still had alot of recoil but it was managable. well worth the $100 IMO.

Even if the buttstock needs drilling out to fit the recoil reducer it's easy enough.  You can also get a slim one that may be able to be fitted into the forearm, epoxy bedded into the wood under the barrel.  It all depends how much wood you have and where you want the weight, or balance point.  If it's a real kicker you may consider going with both if able.  Heavy but should be effective.
