What Do You Use When Fishing........
« on: April 02, 2003, 10:36:58 AM »
Forget the cat, curiosity is getting to me so I'm wondering what do you use when fishing reservoirs, ponds and bodies of water where your large bass boats are not allowed?  I fish a few places where gas powered motors are not allowed but my pedal boat is not practical.  My 15 acre reservoir is about as large as I want to pedal around in when fishing.  Looking for ideas.  Lawdog

LD,
I am fortunate to live on a 7000 acre timbered lake. In my boathouse I have two "Lowe Rangers" (flatbottoms decked out as bassboats). When the water is too low to get to some of my fishing spots in my big rig I jump in one of those. I have trailers for them as well if I want to fish a small lake. I have good strong trolling motors on them if I ever fish a lake where gas engines are prohibited. Guess that's one reason I'm so poor. I need to find a less expensive hobby!
Good Fishing,
Savage

I have a 15' Xpress VJon.  Its got a 40 Merc Tiller steer on it.  40 mph in 6 inches of water.  I built this boat to fish rivers with.  While it is on the heavy side, the welded hull takes a pounding and has no problems.  It comes pre-outfitted with a front deck.  I cut holes in the deck and installed boxes to hold gear (Removed the floatation)  Did the same for the rear seat to hold the fuel and batteries.  It shares the 24 volt trolling motor I have on My Ranger, I just bought an extra mount for it.  We fish 1 tourney a year on the river and gas engines aren't allowed to be used in the tournament.  I give them my kill switch and they hold it till weigh in.  Don't know what I would do on a no engine lake.  I guess I could remove the motor, but its not a clamp on, although I didn't install the bottom 2 bolts for that purpose.

For even lower water, my buddy has a 2 man plastic boat that we use.  This thing is one of the toughest boats I have ever seen.  We installed a big stainless bow eye on it, and you would be shocked at how far we have dragged this thing through fields with tractors and trucks.  It has holes in it, but there's foam in the toons on it, and it floats good.  Little boat will ride on a good dew.  With just a trolling motor, it makes a dandy low water river boat.
