Hornet is cratering primers
« on: June 16, 2006, 03:54:02 PM »
I just got a 22 hornet barrel and it is cratering the primers. The barrel is a factory fitted barrel. The ammo is Remington 45gr hp.  I also got a 44mag barrel fitted at the same time, the primers look just like they should on it. Should I send it back? Maybe it wasnt fitted right? I have no idea on what might be causing it to crater the primers.

Some flow back around the fireing pin is not abnormal.  How much does it creater and how flat is the primer? Everyone has a way they tell when a load is too hot or when there is a problem, my personal favorite is when the primers end up flattened so that the diameter of the flat part is larger than the primer cup.  If you can still see a raidus to the primer edge I think it is OK.  Do you have any other of the same rounds fired in a different rifle?  Larry

James Calhoon's websiet he posted a good read on primers.  It is a reprint of an article in 1995 Varmint Hunter.  They do an evlauation of several major primers and discovered that all primer materials are not the same thickness.  The thickness of the metal in the primer cup listed a Remington 6 1/2 as .020.  The thickness of the 7 1/2 is at .025.  Just enough that it might make a differance.

I don't have the websiet handy, but if you do a search for James Calhoon, he's a bullet maker, he has several good articles on the site.
Thanks,

Im not set up for reloading the hornet so Im just shooting factory rounds in it. I guess I could try some other brand of ammo.
