Ordered a 270 SS Mossberg ATR, get it Tuesday. Already have 2 Stevens 200's, wanted to try the ATR. Anyone have one and how do you like it?
Thanks, poncaguy

Bought one in .270 to replace a Savage I gave to my son in law. I am pleased with it. The swivel mounts are pretty fragile. Broke the rear one first time out. Replaced with a standard screw in type. Easy take-down and plenty accurate for hunting.

I've posted about my experiances with the ATR before.  A while back there was a thread with a lot of discussion about it.  You may want to do a search.

Anyway,  I like mine very much.  The Mrs. gave it to me as a gift back in Oct 2004, which was about when they arrived on the market.  Very accurate with Rem and Win factory 180 gr SP ammo. Groups in the 1" range are typical when I do my part.  Functions fine and is pretty smooth.  I have a new short action in .308 on order at my local dealer.

The swivels are integrated into the stock as is the trigger guard and it has a matte finish.  Definitly inexpensive features that I'm sure keeps the cost down.  At $244 at Wal Mart, its hard to beat it.

Mossberg in the past has brought out hunting type firearms of this nature, but has never stuck with them. If they are still on the market in 5 years or so, I think I'll take a look at one.

Got one in 30-06, very accurate gun.  I like how they free-floated the barrel.

Just for the record, I don't think they made them in stainless steel, I know what your talking about, its just a special coating that makes them look "stainless steel"....

Yeah, got it today, was the '"blued model" anyway, saved me $30 over the phony ss also. I like it, haven't shot it yet. Seems to be as good as my Stevens in looks and quaility.

I've been itching to try one (in .270 - already have a good '06), but always back out.  I just wish that they had woodstock versions available, or at the least set it up so that added a woodstock later was a viable option.  As it is the triggerguard is molded into the stock.

For a good cheap rifle though, everything I've heard about them has been good.

The 2006 model catalog shows that a hardwood (Item#26010) version is being offered, but only in the new short action.  They also offer a Durawood (Item#26115) synthetic long action model that has been offered since last year.

I have a .308 hardwood model on order through my dealer.  He says his supplier has not seen any hardwood or short actions yet.

Shortly after reading of the new offerings in the ATR line, I sent an E-mail to Mossberg expressing my appreciation for their expanding ATR line. I also suggested that they offer the hardwood in the long action as well and suggested other calibers.  I received a quick reply (later the same day) that thanked me for the "kind" message and "for being a Mossberg customer".  Other than "thank you" comments, no additional information was included

My guess is that Mossberg is "treading" lightly with the ATR and in a direction to keep costs down.  Testing the market, so to speak.  In the ATR's price range they have stiff competition with the Stevens 200, a proven design. So even though they are only offering it in four caliber's, those caliber's pretty much cover anything from varmints to large game. The .30-06 may not be a top chioce for the big bears, but it is capable.

Thanks.

Shot the ATR today, good rifle, accurate....................but , my Steven 200's are better rifles. Trigger better on Stevens after you adjust it. Both rifles are definately worth their price though.
