Savage model 10 disappointment
« on: June 14, 2006, 07:02:05 PM »
Hi ,my names Patrick and I'm new to the forum.I have been saving my pennies and recently bought a savage m 10 in .223. I bought the gun in the high gloss finish and must say they did a good job on the blueing.I'm a little disapointed because there's a piece of plastic just in front of the bolt handle thats the bolt handle cams against when you open the bolt thats getting scratched to heck every time you open the bolt.I went to Brownells web site to check on a steel replacement and they call the part a baffle assembly,I think.Does anybody know if this part replaceable  with steel? I have had other Model 110 in the past and don't recall it being plastic.Sorry about my post being kinda negative for my first one
thanks Patrickjames

Hello and welcome to the forums patrickjames. I wish I could help you out but I have no idea what you mean about the plastic thing. I have a Savage rifle it's a model 10 FM Sierra in 7mm-08 and it dosn't have any plastic. Well the stock I guess is plastic but no plastic on the rifle itself. I also had another Savage a model 110 and that didn't have this plastic thing either.
I searched all over the web and could find not one Savage rifle with a piece of plastic behind the bolt. Are you sure it isn't something that was just put there for shipping reasons or something wierd like that?
Is it possible to get a picture of it on here for us to see?

Marylandeer, thanks for the response.I'm getting ready to leave for vacation so I will post a pic when I get back.I have owned many savages and this is new to me.When you open the bolt typically it cams against the backof the reciever .Being it's a short action(223 rem.)there is a plastic or aluminum spacer on the the bolt body that in between the bolt handle and rear of the reciever.I hope this makes more sense.thanks for your time. patrickjames

The dollar bill trick doesn't really work. Its not enough space between the barrel and stock. The best way to check barrel floating gap is to hold the rifle vertically with the butt on the floor. Grasp the barrel tightly in your left hand and tap the forend with the heal of your right hand if you get a "tap" sound you don't have enough space. If you don't have enough space when you put the forend on a rest it will compress and contact the barrel changing the harmonic vibrations each time you fire, which in turn changes the POI. Hope this helps.

I know the part you are talking about.  It rides on the bolt body directly in front of the bolt handle.  I have a 110FP and mine is aluminum.  I have no idea if this is interchangable but a call to savage should answer this question.  If it is you should be able to order that part.

I know exactly what you're describing. It is a very common problem which nearly all Savage and Stevens rifles suffer. I believe the part is the gas baffle that attaches to the bolt just in front of the handle. Apparently Savage does not consider it to be a problem,  because they have not seen fit to correct it. I agree with you, it detracts from the rifle's appearance. I've seen this on numerous Savage and Stevens rifles.

I would call Savage and see what they will do for you.

I just checked my Stevens 200, mine is aluminum.
The aluminum ones exist, must be a place to get one.

Thats the cocking/extraction cam, it is a seperate piece because it's cheaper than trying to mill one on the receiver bridge. They used to be steel, if they are now aluminum, you could have one that didn't get anodized.  ::)

I got a model 10 package gun from Walmart about 9 months ago. The rear gas baffel is blued steel.
