What would you expect to pay for this?
« on: June 14, 2006, 04:03:35 AM »
What would you expect to pay for this gun? Thanks.

3 year old CZ550 American in 270 Winchester with following attributes and accessories:

Factory rings

Tasco 6x-24x scope ($75 new and OK for sighting in and varmint shooting)

Versapod Bipod extendable to 24 inches.

Minor dents on stock where a bipod is mounted, not visible unless you look at underside of forearm. No hard hunts. About 300 rounds fired through it. Bluing perfect. Bore perfect and thoroughly cleaned of fouling.

RCBS dies. 100 cases of brass, about 100 rounds of loaded ammo.

Shoots 1.25" groups with 130 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips, 0.5" groups with Hornady V-Max bullets.  Have load recipes and sample targets.

Comes with factory box and manual.

Gun was bought as a backup rifle for a handgun antelope hunt. Was not used on that hunt. Only field shooting ever done with the rifle was at prairie dogs using 3,000fps loads-- no super high velocity or maximum loads have ever been fired in the rifle.  Gun has always been well cared for.

Reason for selling: I have no anticipated use for the rifle during the next ten years and don't want to keep it if I won't be using it.  Can't give it to my son because he's left-handed and I want to give him a left-handed rifle.

I have a good buddy who is an FFL and he tells me that rifles should command half of retail the second it is carried outside of the store. However, looking at the gun auction sites and his theory is blown right out of the water. What's more, you just don't see many CZs on the resale market, which, in my opinion, keeps the resale price a tad higher. All-in-all, I would say you should ask for between $545 and $600. This includes around $15 per 20 rounds of the loaded ammunition. Good luck with it ... Tom Purdom

I hope I don't discourage you or bust your bubble but...check out the going prices for a new 550 American long action on gun broker and auction arms and you'll find them going for about $500 all day every day NIB, and they come with factory rings at that price too.
The used Tasco  is worth in 98% clean condition about $40-$50...maybe/maybe not a little more when sold mounted on the gun...on the other hand some guys would have no interest in the gun if I had to buy the scope with it...or only allow a super low price like $25 for the scope. Scope is prolly a good EBay item if you still have the box.

I am not familiar with the BiPod but the dents should knock down the rifle's price some -see if they can be steamed out some as long as the finish is not broken...so I'd look at advertising it as described w/scope and bipod for auction on GB or AA at about $450 as a starting or hidden reserve price and hope to get maybe a little over $500 to maybe $550-$575 tops during the late summer/early fall right before hunting fever kicks in and the big box retailers start their give away prices.

What are the freight policy's about shipping Firearms to the US from your listed profile location in Bermuda? - or is that really your location? as that may play with the price some too in a negative manner since the buyer should pay the freight ...unless you want to add the freight in the price...and then you need to think about shipping the gun to just the lower 48 'cause freight to Alaska would kill you.

If the loaded ammo is reloads you will have trouble getting anyone to buy them as they are a total unknown -and possibly a serious liability issue for you if something unforseen happens with the ammo and it causes a serious problem..with all due respect I wouldn't shoot them as I don't know you or how much expertise you have at reloading. If the loaded ammo is a factory load in original box's then they will sell with the used RCBS dies, empty brass and loose bullets and can be priced at Midway and is best sold on EBay- expect to get about 60-75% + freight of Midways price in this common a caliber.

One secret to the online auctions is to take plenty of good clear pictures with no flash burn bright spots. Highly figured wood that came on some of the guns imported in 2001 -2002 will also help sell the gun and hold the price. Look at an angle, under a strong light, for a very faint set of year numbers on the front right side of the receiver ...took me three trys to find 'em on my 9.3x62 American but they are there right behind the barrel/reciever joint on the side of the receiver. Good luck
Ron

If I were looking to buy it, $400 would be about my top dollar considering you can purchase this rifle new for $487.99 from Whittaker's.
