Are all hogs the same?
« on: June 11, 2006, 10:34:44 AM »
As I read posts from the different States that we hunt, it occurs to me that hogs in NM, TX, OK, CA, GA, AL, FL, etc., while appearing to be, may not be the same.   Sure, they're all "just hogs", but are the hogs on the flood plain of the "Dismal Swamp" in Florida the same as those in New Mexico?

Are dry conditions better or worse than wet conditions for "growing" hogs?  Every animal requires water, but arid conditions mean obtaining water from plants rather than wallowing in swamps and taking daily mud baths.

Is the meat any different?  Are their temperments any different?

In general, are all USA hogs the same?

I strongly suspect that the hog's diet might influence the taste
of them to some extent. Along those lines, I'd also think hogs that
live in areas that are wetter probably have better food supplies, and
so might have more fat than the hogs "toughing it out" in more
arid locations. The hogs I've seen around here as of late sure
look thinner than they did before the present drought kicked in.
