First time with a Ruger

Picked up my first Ruger 77 MkII in early spring (laminated, stainless, left-hand in .25-06).  I'd been waiting to shoot it until I got a scope for it.  Rather than wait another month or two till I could afford the optics, I took a Simmons 8-pt scope off my old package Savage and took it out to the range this morning.  
After a time consuming barrel break in (I've never been sure if this does any good or not; but, I figure it can't hurt), I made some 3-shot groups with Federal Fusion ammo and some handloads (IMR 4350 behind a Speer 100gr spitzer).
Groups were around 1.25 - 1.5" at 100 yards from the bench.  Not great, but not bad either for my first efforts.  I plan on putting a Timney trigger on it and getting a better scope.  I think that will help.  And I've got lots more bullet and powder combos to try.  
I like the rifle, but those Ruger recoil pads are hard!  Think I'll put a Pachmyr decelerator on it.

It's a good looking gun but it will take a little tweaking.  I don't have any regrets about buying it; but, my last couple Savages shot better out of the box.

If you have the owner's manual, tighten the action screws by the directions in it. If you don't have one, down load it from Ruger.Sometimes the action screws aren't tight from the factory. I use a finishing nail to screw the firing pin out of the bolt to clean and relube it with Rem Drylube. You won't have any cold weather problems if you do that.

Put it in a freezer for an hour and then shoot it, if it shoots the same as it had been, then you have a good one!!! I had 1 that would'nt hit the broad side of a barn when the temps. dropped below 30 degrees,  I have since found out that things could've been done to correct the problem!

Ruger 25-06...fine shootin' rifles

I have a Ruger 77 MK/II 25-06 as well. Mine is a stainless/synthetic and is the first 25-06 Rem. I've ever owned. I'm very pleased with the Ruger 25-06! Its recoil is VERY mild, with its medium/heavy contoured 24" barrel.

Mine shoots very well using Nosler 110 gr. Accubonds over IMR-4350. I'll be trying other handloads in it in the future. So far, I really like the rifle and cartridge. I even killed a couple of deer with mine last year!

What kind of bullet performance did you get with the 110 AB's.
Currentlly shooting the 117 hot cores but was planning on switching to the AB's if there performance is good on WT. Please include distances and angles. Thanks DM

Great gun and a should be a good hunter. I have one with the skeletonized stock. Black and stainless. With handloads you should be able to find a recipe that will get you good sub moa preformance.

I use 56 grians of IMR 4831 and Speer 100 grain SPBT CCi primers. Good for Mule Deer, Whitetails and Antelope. In addition a very good dog town  gun.
