SP101 Wolff spring swap out
« on: June 06, 2006, 09:13:19 AM »
Not getting much help on other forums with this. Hope I fare better here.
I'm certainly no gunsmith. But I figured I could swap out a couple springs to reduce the trigger pull on my SP101. Got the Wolff reduction pack, which has 3 different weight hammer springs, and 1 trigger return spring. The hammer spring was a no brainer to swap out. But it appears the trigger return spring is encased in a metal housing.

Anybody swap one of these out before? How'd ya do it?

Thanks,
Tuckerdog1

The spring return spring is called by Ruger a trigger guard latch spring and is retained by a trigger guard latch. A slip fit pin holds it in place. Press in on the trigger guard latch and press out the lateral pin. Then ease out the latch and replace the spring. I recommend you go to Ruger's website and download the manual for the SP101. It is a acrobat file. They have manuals and parts lists. They both have illustrated parts breakdown drawings that can be very helpful in seeing the relationship of the parts. Here is the manual for the SP101.

Tom,

Thanks so much. I actually have the manual that came with the gun, but just didn't look close enough. Hope that pin isn't too tough to push out, or back in. I'll let ya know. Also let ya know how the trigger pull feels afterward.
I'll have to pop a few rounds off at the range to be sure everything works as intended, before I can give it the thumbs up though.

The cross pin is a slip fit. It is really easy to do. Just have some type of container like a plate, to catch the parts and keep them from rolling away and hiding. Ruger revolvers are designed to be taken apart easily. After the first time, you will be a veteran.

My Sp101's trigger was greatly improved by use of a Wolfe Spring Kit. It is a .32 H&R Mag 4" and has become one of my favorite revolvers.

Ditto to Dale's experience with the springs.  A bit of judicious stoning and a Pachmayr grip transformed the revolver, I love it!      ;D

Ive done a couple and it does help but i would recomend you leave the stock trigger return spring in the gun. A couple i did had problems with trigger return with the light spring in them that showed up in double action shooting

factory trigger return springs are 10 lbs.  The Wolf reduced trigger return spring is 8 lbs.  Theres that much difference in the 2 lbs. to run into reliability problems?

Whats it like with the 9 pound reduced power hammer spring & the stock 10 pound trigger return spring installed?
