Magazine Follower For Marlin/LeverEvolution
« on: May 16, 2006, 12:02:49 PM »
I have read that in order to use the new Hornady LeverEvolution ammo in the larger caliber Marlin's, .444, .450, .45/70, the magazine follower needs to be changed to a newer type. Has anyone changed out this on their Marlin big bore levergun?

Where did you read this? Was it on one of the forums or was it from Hornady? If it was from Hornady I would believe it. If it was from one of the forums well, ever hear of husband tales?

Wait did you hear it from the "Ask the Experts" from the GunBroker.com Message Forums? If you did take what they say with a grain of salt. Many of the "Experts" there were sure that the Rossi 92 in 454 Casull was bound to be defective.

I for one do not see any reason to chance it out.

FYI, The last round in the magazine has a tendency to hang up when the carrier is lifting because of the pointed tip on the LeveRevolution ammo. Stuck a small pewter plug (3/8" dia) on the end of the magazine feed using a plug of grease to hold it (for temporary use only) and the problem was a eliminated. Just tried them in my Marlin, not my Winchester though.

Was the purpose of this plug to lengthen the follower or was it dished out to hold the point? Please elaborate on the problem and the solution.

Thanks, -TC-

I read this in one of Hornady's  articles on the new LeverEvolution ammo. I believe I also read the same thing in one of the gun magazines I get, a while ago. I am going to call Marlin, and talk to customer service on this.

Think about it.  If the problem is the magazine follower then only the last round, the one loaded into the magazine first, gets hung up.  The others rest nose tip to cartridge base and feed just fine.

Solution: load a traditional bullet load first into the magazine with the LEVERevolution ammo in behind it.  You still have a full magazine, if that's important to you, the LEVERevolution rounds feed just fine, and the last round will feed just fine, as well.

No parts to buy, need not disassemble the rifle, it's just that simple.

I like Wyoming's solution.  If you need that last shot, it is going to be up close, and if you have fired all the other rounds at something going away, it doesn't matter what the last bullet is, you probably are going to miss with that one, too. :)
