I read that the easiest way to get a 50 caliber rifle at a reasonable (!?!) price is to rebarrel a CZ 550 Magnum in .416 to .500 A-Square. Supposedly, all you have to do is rebarrel, clean up the extractor and work on the feed rails a bit.
Has anyone tried this project and how did it go? Any idea what it would cost for a decent gunsmith to perform this conversion?
You can buy a CZ 550 Magnum in .505 Gibbs off the shelf for about $2200, but then you'd have to deal with Gibbs cases rather than the .460 Weatherby cases.
