Hog load for 45/70
« on: May 13, 2006, 10:37:34 AM »
I'm looking for some suggestions on a load for a 45/70 Marlin Guide gun for hogs and deer. I'm looking at using a 300, 400 or 460 grain Cast Performance WFNGC bullet, but am also concerned with leading problems in the Marlin. Also would like to hear comments from anyone using Cast Performance bullets in this caliber, or suggestions for a good jacketed bullet. What bullet weight would be best?

Hogs are hardly bullet proof; I'd suggest a 400-grain bullet at ca. 1500 fps - if you insist on cast.  If properly sized that bullet should not cause excessive leading in the Marlin and will not give prohibitive recoil.  The Nosler 300-grain Partition at ca. 1800-2000 fps would be a good choice for a jacketed bullet, as would the Hornady 350 RN....just file a small flat on the tip of the latter.

I can't think of a better load than my go to load of a 405gr JSP with H322 powder for 1900fps.  Either the remington bulk bullets or the 405gr kodiak bonded.  Great hunting load.

Hornady makes two 350 grain bullets.
The round nose already mentioned, but they also make
a flat point. No need to file anything...
As for best bullet weight, that might be decided by what the
rilfe shoots best. Any of the bullets mentioned should do the job.

I load a 405gr hard cast bullet at 1750fps. It's the only load I use in my 1895CB. I suppose I'm a masocist. It's not really nesscary to load near that heavy for hogs. In fact I once shot a 350lb sow faceing me at about 30 feet in the head and it exited at the back of her right ham. End to end. Spectacular, but not necessary.
