hey
im looking for ideas on a cheap gun to kep in my jeep for ventures
into the woods i run my jeep around the cabin trails and would like
something around $250 to throw in it when im out there just in case
that lowly coyote or anything might cross my path
any suggestions??
should i buy a milsurp sporter or something along those lines
mossberg atr 100??
thanks for any help guys

Most here have had great luck with the stevens 200, myself included.
Mines in the 25-06 and shoots like a charm. My buddy got one in the 22-250 and has no complaints either. If you shop around you can stay well within your budget.

I have a few that I may have in my truck like my Su. 14 Contender, RRA 223, etc., but in keeping with your $250.00 limit, I carry a couple of Handi Rifles that qualify well & offer some advantages for vehicles.
(1) You can have a decent barrel length but still have a short gun,(24"223
would be like packing a 20" bolt gun) which is nice in a Jeep, gives you
room to position/fire the rifle.
(2) This same length advantage will give you good velocities with this short gun.
(3) When you get on a County Rd./Hwy., you can unload quickly due to it
being a break open & no magazine & you can reload quickly when you get back on the Ranch Road or when ready to shoot.
(4) Esp. with the syn. you don't have to worry about scarring it up or you can just camo paint the hardwood stock, vehichle guns get alot of scars
but we are not talking about a Wea. Mk V here.
(5) Crossbar safety is a safe design, we don't need a loaded gun in the vehicle, but if you forget, it is more forgiving.
(6) If it is stolen while in town, it won't be like losing a 40XB.
(7) Now you can spend more for a Scope.

A military surplus like the Swiss k31 would fit your needs. They have a detachable 5 round mag which makes it very handy for a truck gun. They are cheap, 90-150 bucks. They are high quality,rugged and durable and accurate. Ammo is available as bulk military Swiss 7.5x55 and there are other options for ammo. Comparable to 308 Winchester.

I picked up a practically new century arms centurian in 30/06. Its a mauser action that they cleaned up and rebarreled, settled in a cheap synthetic stock and called it good. I picked it up for 200 bucks at a local pawn shop with the plan of having it rebarreled into a whelen or a 9.3x62. I made the mistake of shooting it afew times and it just shot too good to cut up. With a leupold 2-7 VXII it wieghts right in at 6.75lbs. It has become my truck rifle.

I would go with either a Mosin Nagant model 44, 38 or 91/30 (if you can do with a long rifle) Ammo is cheap and available and you don't have to rely on surplus. Softpoint ammo is readily available. Power is between 308 and 30-06. SOG has all models available though they don't list them all on their web site.

Another good choice would be a Mauser. The 24/47 Yugos are in very good condition and reasonably priced. Ammo for 8mm Mauser is available everywhere. Power is about on par with the 30-06. Stripper clips are available for the Mausers for quick loading. You could also go really cheap and get a Turkish Mauser or the other end with a German or Czech. Mausers have the best safety.

The Swiss K-31 is a nice rifle but ammo isn't as available as the Mauser or Mosin.

The SKS would also make for a good gun if you want an auto loader. The 5966 Yugo is inexpensive and you can get them in as new condition. Ammo is readily available.

You may be able to buy them somewhere locally - prices will be a bit higher higher.

Winchester Mod. 94 - 30-30 or a 30 cal. carbine... Both take a beating and are lots of fun to shoot.

My truck gun is a HANDI RIFLE in .223. Heres why,

1) inexpensive, 2) good shooter. 3) Inexpensive ammunition. 4) SIMPLE GUN. 5) short rifle for barrel length. ( no bolt )

With the ammunition in the ashtray, all I have to do is open the action drop in a round and I am ready to rid the world of an other skunk.

I know this is a little expensive but it is the best truck gun I have ever used. It is an Encore pistol in 6.5x55, with a 12 inch barrel and a 2x Nikon heavy reticle. This gun rides ON THE DASHBOARD in a soft case with the greatest of ease. It has rifle like accuracy out to 200 yards. It can be loaded and put on target in seconds. It can be stored out of sight under the seat with no problem.

A savage 110 is a good truck gun, I got one used awhile back and it shoots good and I dont have to worry about it getting torn up. I also have a marlin 336 in .35 rem and it is a little better just because it is shorter but I dont have the range of the savage that is in .30-06. The savage has a cheap scope on it that really needs replaced and the 336 has a ghost ring.

Sence we all are throwing cents around, guess I'll add.

-NEF Handi Rifle with Synthetic stock or if you want to spend even less a Rossi single would fit as well. Light weight, generally good shooters (and if not you can make them), not hurt by scratching it of dinging it up, ets.. Here you're looking around $150-200 or so.

-Mossberg ATR and Stevens 200 are both a good call as well, if you want a repeater. And the ATR's are now offered in short action models 243 and 308. About $244-280 or so.

-Mil. Surplus offers a wide selection of goods here. The M-44 or M-38 Nagants are among the smallest out there. The 7.62x54 Russky is a formidable round, with range and power. And you can buy a lot of 400 rounds or so for about $40 and throw a box in your back pack or (padded-glove box.
SKS's are tons of fun, low recoil, easy to clean and strip down, are built to be beaten, and low cost of rounds make it a good choice too.

-I would also check out the used gun rack at your local pawn shops and stores. Never know what you'll run up on

If you can find a Ruger M-77 International (shorter barrel/full length woodf stock) in a caliber you like, it may be worth considering. I have one in .270 and despite what people say about full wood stocks it is a shooter. Low weight, short and points nice.

Yugo M48 8mm Mauser I bought from J&G in Shotgun News a couple years ago.

Looked great out of the box, 3" groups @100 with those crude sights (Hey, my eyes ain't gettin any younger!)

$79.95 and ammo was cheap so I bought a butt load of it (Hey, it's corrosive but nothing a little windex and good cleaning won't take care of).

I won't cry TO much if something happens to it.

Ditto here including the chambering. Bought it new early this spring.

Painted the stock a disgusting plum color and am proud to say it already has a little surface rust on the outside of the barrel.

Paid $260 for the rifle and put my best scope on it because it gets the most oppurtunities.

It fills the niche........

I'd second that advice. Not only are they relatively cheap (you can find the lever .30-30's for $200 pretty often), but they are also very light and quick to handle.

Just got my 35 Whelen Handi today, put my Mueller 2x7 MultiDot on it. Will make one great truck rifle, especially if I see any buffalo, bears, mountain lions........... :-D ............
