I need a .308
« on: May 03, 2006, 04:03:35 PM »
Hi,
I decided to buy a new .308 rifle.  I will predominately use the rifle for target shooting and maybe the occasional White Tail but overall it's going to be for targets.
I've narrowed it down to three possible models:

Remington Model 700 VLS
Savage 10FP
Savage 12FV

If I end up getting a Savage I will probably restock it at some point.  Any input or experience with any of these models or suggestions on comparable models would be greatly appreciated.  Thanks.

Any possible way I can talk you into also considering a Tikka in 308 ?  Once you shoot tikka, there is no other.....

I own a savage 12fvss in 22-250 and love it.  My son has a 111F in Win 308 and is saving up to replace the "cheap" nylon stock. So the first thing you will replace is the stock.

Remington has better stock but the first thing you will do is replace the trigger.

Tikka T3 never shot one, don't want one, why enrich Berrtta when they gutted a great gun line with a two piece bolt etc.  Now if you are talking about picking up a used Tikka made before 2002 that would be a rifle.

If I could make a suggestion for a few dollars more a CZ 550 American or CZ 550 Varmint Laminated is a great rifle.  I own a CZ 550 American in Win 270 and it trumps either the Savage or the Remington and especially the Tikka.  The single stage set trigger it out of this world.

couple months back, I was like that too, I thought "why buy tikka when we have american made here in USA"......  Then my friend let me borrow his tikka 30-06 for 1 week.  Now I will not buy a bolt gun unless the word "tikka" is stamped on it.  Don't belive me ?  Go to a gun shop and hold one, work the bolt, but im Warning you becuase you WILL buy it right away.

I have the 12FV and it is a joy to shoot, also very accurate. With the accutrigger, it is one of the few rifles that I have that did not need a trigger job OTB. The heavy barrel lets me shoot more before the barrel heats up but given it's weight, I have other rifles I prefer to carry in the woods. I'd like to tweak the butt plate to have a bit more curve for my shoulder and my rifle came with a small (to me) bolt handle, but these are not significant detractions to me given its shooting performance. I'd buy another one if I did not have so many other shooting needs that should be met

Just to let you know: the transmission on Ford Mustang GT 2006 is made in France. And it's a fine one.

It hurts me to pay my dollar to a non-usa made gun but for around 600 dollars, you can get a stainless tikka that WILL out shoot any $1000 american made rifle.  Its sad, America has the brains / man power / and technology.... but they simply don't use it for thier customers advantage.

Check out www.gunbroker.com add the shipping and $25 FFL transfer fee and that will give you a good idea what a rifle is going to cost you.  Then start prowling everywhere rifles are sold and keep talking to the staff.  If you can wait a deal will come to you.

I picked up my CZ 550 American Win270 between Christmas and NewYears for $400   plus shipping and FFL $40.  Yes I bought it sight unseen but I knew what I wanted.

The budgeting trick we use is budget some cash and put it in an envolope each month in the gun safe.  When the bug to buy bites, you have cash in your hand to deal with.

I didn't need a .308 and I've bought 2 of them in the past 10 days.  A new Mossberg SSI and a K98 Mauser, converted by Israeli's to .308.

Go with the Savage in 308, more police departments are finding the Savage more accurrate.

While I don't have a Rem 700 VLS, I do have and shoot a Rem 700 VSF in .308 Win.  I also have a Savage model 12 in .22-250.  At 300-400 yards, I think the Remington is a better shooter than the Savage, but the difference is small and may be due to wind and better downrange performance from the .308's heavier bullets.  The VSF has a fiberglass stock and aluminum bedding block for the action (the VLS does not).  The Savage is pillar bedded and barrel free-floated.

They're both good rifles and you would do well with either.  Still, the accu-trigger is a might nice feature.

I fully agree with nasem.  I have a Tikka Continental Varmenter in .308.  The accuracy is excellent and the fact that the trigger is easily adjustable is a nice extra.  I have shot groups at 300 yds. 1-1/2" with reloads.  I was so impressed with it that I got the same thing in 22-250, same results.

Hey Jackal,

There's a heap of other good rifles out there in .308 .
Sako, CZ, Vanguard et al

I wouldn't want to lug a long barrelled Varminter around all day after deer, though.
Get a good light deer rifle in .308 .

I have a Sako 75 Stainless synthetic, in .308, and it's the best.
I use it mostly for silhouette, and practice, on the range. Shoots M.O.A.
It has a standard profile 22" barrel.
I've used it for some 'F' class target shooting, but it boots my ass a bit too much for my liking, in the prone position.

I also have a Weatherby Vanguard 'Varmint' Red Mist in .223.
They do this in .308 as well. Should be a good range rifle, for you, and with it's shorter 22" #3 profile barrel, and synthetic stock, should be light enough to lug around chasing Whitetail.

For serious target work, you should consider something a bit more specific.
I see plenty of Custom 'F' Class and 'Long Range' rigs built on all sorts of actions and calibres. Have a good look around.
Depends on what you want to do with it.

cheers,
Sean in 'Godzone'

I've got a Savage 110FP (long action) in 25-06. The FP model has a heavier barrel that is a plus for a primarily target rifle. It only weighes one pound more than the sporter barrels, so it's not a great disadvantage, if you take it hunting. The accutrigger on the Savage is also a plus for tartget shooting. I replaced the stock on my 110FP with a Bell and Carlson stock which improved the looks of this gun and actually improved the accuracey a tad. The Savages are extremely accurate rifles right out of the box.
Hunting and fishing are not matters of life or death. They are much more important than that.

Jackal--

Last year I deceided to give a Savage rifle a try.  I've always been a Remington man in the past, I've shot them for nearly 40years now.  I bought a Savage 12FLV (left-handed) .308win.  I bought it for a long range varmint rifle.

I restocked it with a Choate Varminter stock, put a SSS tactical bolt handle on it, a five min. job.  I deceided to splurg, at least for me and I bought a Leupold 6.5-20x50mm LRT w/ varmint reticle, added a Farrel 10moa base with leupold QRW rings.  First time I spent that much on a scope, what a joy to use.

After breaking in the barrel I loaded up 50 rnds of 150gr. Nosler balistic tips with a mid range load of Varget and BR-2 primers.  I went to the range and after finishing siting it in I set up a target and shot two 3 shot groups.  The first was .38", not bad -- however the next group was .16".  That is the smallest group I've ever managed.

I'am not saying I'll never buy another brand again, but I'm very very sold on a Savage........

If your on a budget, think about a Howa 1500 or a Savage 110 with the accu trigger. These two have got good reviews in Guns and Ammo. But then again they gave Remington model 710 a good review too. 8)
