Author Topic: N frame and a crooked rail... (w/pictures) (Read 891 times)

I am trying to put an Aimpoint on my 629 Classic. After 3 rails (a Weaver and 2 B-Squares), none of them fit straight. Take a look at the picture below and tell me if anyone else has had this problem. I KNOW all three rails (all brand new) can't be crooked to the left like that.

Btw, I just sent it back to S&W to see if it might be a misaligned rear sight channel (where the rail sits) or if the holes are drilled and tapped off center.

It looks really goofy with the scope attached. The scope points off to the left of the barrel's center line. I could probably get it to zero, but I don't think I should have to live with such an odd looking setup... especially since the gun is fairly new.

What's y'alls opinions? Do I have a legitimate gripe?

This is where the front of the rail meets the top of the barrel (the brass support should be centered)...

Looks like the holes are drilled of center to me. I count two full 'ribs' to the left of the mounting screw and only one full 'rib' to the right in your second picture. Now let's see if S&W makes good on it.

The revolver is suppose to arrive Thursday (May 4th) at S&W. I'll let you know what they tell me.

I wonder if they'll have to replace the frame or if they can do something with the holes... plugging, re-drilling and tapping? Hopefully they'll have a good, permanent fix of some sort. I'm really curious as to what they'll do.

My guess is that it is unfixable. They should send you a replacement gun.

I just called S&W and here's what they said...

The barrel was crooked, but was fixable and was done under warranty. I figured that return shipping might be covered (because of the barrel issue), but they said since I sent it in for a few Performance Center upgrades in addition to the warranty work, I was responsible for $14 in return shipping charges. :roll:

My other S&W revolver (686) seems to built a lot better than the 629 was. I love that 686. A buddy of mine has a 442 and a 657. Both of the cylinders on those two guns started coming unscrewed from the ejector rod while out target shooting.

Is this indicative of S&W's quality, did we just a few not so well made guns by coincidence or are we just expecting too much in terms of wanting a quality gun from a large manufacturer?
