The “Cookout”
March, 2003

The following is an account of a series of incidents involving myself along with Todd, BM and his stepson (Bart) during a “cookout” on BM’s 80 acres of bottomland.

With several BF* encounter reports consisting of incidents involving campers with no prior intent of seeking BF, it was suggested we try a “cookout” to see what would happen.

Todd & I arrived ~ one hour before sundown and began to get things set up by gathering up kindling for the firewood we’d brought and setting up the Weber kettle for the steaks, etc.  The rib eyes had been marinating in my special “Cajun” concoction for a couple of days.  A fluorescent bulb type lantern was placed on the cab of my truck situated facing to the south a few feet from the campfire.  BM & Bart showed up in his Kawasaki Mule just as the sun was setting below the tree line.

Weather conditions were evening temps in the low fifties, with a slight breeze out of the NNE and clear skies with a full moon.

Other than the usual “signal howls” announcing our respective arrivals things were relatively quiet until ~20 HRS when we had the steaks on the grill and the smoke/flavor was drifting slowly across the “hidden bean field” (HBF) in a SSW direction.  Bart was the first to hear something coming up from the east side of the field across the creek (the creek runs parallel to the ~7 acre field ~20-60 yards away on the east side and then loops to it’s north and west side(s) before heading westward toward the lake proper)  on the opposite bank headed straight at our location.  He observed (w/BM’s GEN III NV binoculars) a large, dark object ~75 yards away before it reversed course back to the south.  A few minutes later Todd heard and briefly observed something moving rapidly across the SE corner of the HBF w/his GEN III NV goggles but couldn’t make out a definite target for ID purposes as he only saw it for a couple of seconds.

After we’d stuffed down the steak, corn, potatoes and pie at ~22:30 HRS, BM & Bart decided to crank up the Mule and ease around the HBF perimeter lane to the opposite (SW) corner from the campfire and climb up into #7 stand to see what they could observe.  This stand is ~12’ (floor) off the ground with fully enclosed sides/top.  Most of BM’s stands on his property are made with construction materials consisting of 6X6 legs and 2X4 framing w/2X6 flooring.  They look much like an old wooden oil derrick and weigh ~1200-1600# each.

They slowly headed south and then west around the HBF w/o turning on the Mule’s headlights as the moon was so bright they really weren’t necessary.  ~70 yards from reaching the SW corner of the HBF where #7 stand is located BM observed a figure (~6-7’ in height) standing in the tree line bordering the south side of HBF.  Bart felt it was a man standing there (he was a total nonbeliever in anything BF related up to that point) and didn’t want to risk taking a shot at it/him.

They eased up to #7 and quickly ascended up to the platform where BM gave Bart the NV binoculars while he fumbled around to ready his Marlin .444 rifle (they had been relaying everything to Todd and I via our 2-way radios) when Bart let out an exclamation that he saw the BF headed out across the HBF in a NNE direction straight at the campfire where Todd & I were sitting.  At that point Todd jumped up and hurried over to the truck tailgate to get his NV goggles whereupon, BM radioed the BF had stopped (apparently when he saw we were still at the camp) and changed course to the east at a high rate of speed.  Both Bart and Todd observed it in quad mode rushing across the field into the SE corner tree line.

Within a few minutes of this action Todd began to scan up the creek (in a southerly direction) and along the HBF tree line with his NV goggles to see if anything more could be observed.  He was leaning against the right front fender of my truck and suddenly turned around to me (with his face illuminated by the lantern) and began to try and speak but no words would come out.  From his facial expression I knew exactly what he meant and jumped to the truck and grabbed the shotgun stoked w/HeviShot OO buckshot. Meanwhile, Todd had taken off at a dead run east out across the creek headed into the adjacent meadow.  I caught up ~100 yards away and reminded him that we weren’t going to run this thing down but might well run slam into an ambush or other tricky situation.  We headed back to the camp site in hopes the BF would return a third time and we’d be better prepared.

Todd’s description (I’d only caught a fleeting glimpse as it bailed out of the creek area) of the BF’s facial expression (almost the same as mine, to follow in a separate incident report) was that of anger, hatred and disgust probably for being busted out by a human.  There were two trees that framed it’s outline (was on all fours) just as Todd got the final look before the BF took off running which measured out to ~6’ apart from it’s head to rump with estimated height when standing erect at ~9-10’.

Unfortunately, nothing else happened so at ~24:00 BM & Bart returned from #7 in the Mule and announced they were calling it a night.  Todd and I waited around for another 30-45 minutes with the woods in an absolute dead silence as even the wind had died down to nothing by then.  We decided to pack it up and were just about done when a loud crack and then crashing sound was heard ~75-100 yards NNE of our location.  We were totally puzzled as to exactly what made the noise as I commented that it must have been an awfully big tree that hit the ground.

We drove up to BM’s house on the hill top and were discussing the evening’s events with him out in the front yard when BM’s beagle’s & Brittany’s in the kennels situated ~30 yards north off his front porch suddenly went ballistic barking and howling.  About that time we heard the sound of something flying up through the timber (out of rattlesnake canyon) cutting limbs and leaves as it sailed through the air and landed with a resounding thud just short of the kennels.  It later turned out to be a grapefruit sized rock.  The pups immediately shut up and bailed into their dog houses and didn’t make another sound.

The next day D.G., Todd & BM went down into the bottoms to investigate the source of the noise we’d heard the night before.  There, they found #9 stand had been ripped out from the tree (it had been nailed to with landscape nails for support) and picked up, pirouetted on one leg and slammed to the ground.  There was no evidence of human activity involved in this feat as with the stand weighing ~1200# it would have taken several men straining and huffing to first break the tree (which was the cracking sound we heard) from the nails and then topple the stand in the fashion D.G. and the guys found.  The only disturbance they noted around the immediate spot of the stand was a partial heel print where the leaves were thinnest as most of the area still had a layer 3-4” deep of last fall’s leaf litter.

We surmised this (and the rock being thrown) was the work of the alpha male BF that Todd had observed at ~23:30 HRS the evening before.  This was the first incident of serious belligerent behavior we had observed in the general area aside from a couple of times we’d been growled at or had saplings violently shaken near our proximity.

Unfortunately, this was the last time we’ve had any decent encounters on BM’s place as shortly thereafter residential development began to occur in an intensive fashion in this general area.  We just learned last week that a ~4,000 SF house was built on the SE corner of what had previously been a sanctuary (inaccessible by humans) to the east of BM’s place which would tend to account for a large portion of the decreased BF activity.  Both Wagoner and Rogers counties were recently mentioned in the news as the fastest growing (10% annual rate) areas in population for Oklahoma.  We believe these events account for the BF population apparently moving off to more remote locations in the general vicinity.

*BF is the term used to describe an entity currently unidentifed via modern forensic science.

John, do you think that maybe the strip mining to the north of BM's place is what caused those critters to be there on his place? That area to the north and NW used to have some thick brush in places, and the mining pretty well cleared out some good cover.
Hey, hold my beer and watch this.

Yes, I think you're exactly right just as the recent residential development has greatly diminished the BF quality on his place as well.

All of the McSpadden property south of BM's place is probably the last contigous area of unbroken cover within several miles of Cherokee Central.

There's a good bit of Govt. land that is pretty thick in the Plum Creek area not too far from BM's place as well as the area close to the lake around Alluwe and to the north of Alluwe...thick bottoms. Bob Hartley owns several square miles of the old Peabody Coal land, and he doesn't allow much activity on his property...there's some old spoil piles on some, that that stuff is tough to get around in.

To me, if there's a good population, I'd think the Plum Creek area would be a place to look. There's not alot of human activity around the areas I've mentioned except during deer season, and some during duck season on up around the hwy 60 area, and a couple of miles to the north and south of hwy 60. Most of the area is thick with brush and vegetation.

Are you guys near Timberghost in the Kiamichi mountains?
Or are you in flat farmland?

T,

This area is ~180 miles NNW of Timberghost's area and consists of open prairie with rolling hills and canyons up to ~200' deep along with river bottoms thick with foliage.

Telahnay's g' son
I heard this story before.
Heard it from Bullet Maker long before this as told in incidents (such as the downed stand) to the full version.

The thing is that your version jibes with Bullet Makers and you guys have two witnesses to boot.
Hate to ask you this but What Walked In Front of Bullet makers camera?

I only ask this because I was the only one to post a painted outline of what I thought I saw in the locked thread of the other forum when everyone else said NO.

Again...We are talking about four of you guys, two of you telling the same story, and having two witnesses. The potential for getting a good picture in your area seems to be high.

What walked in front of the camera?

From personal examination of the picture I'd say it's either a beaver or at best, a "definite maybe".

Also, I'd hafta say the chances of getting a great photo on BM's place have declined along with all other activity as property development increases in his area.  :(

Good luck in your new searches and Thanks. :D

I don't mean to rain on anybody's parade but (and this goes for anyone with intentions as such); isn't it illegal to shoot an animal not listed in your state's hunting digest? And considering "sasquatch", "bigfoot", etc is not listed, wouldn't it be illegal to be "hunting" them? Of course the gun is there for self-defense, but it sounds like the gun is being aimed before the BF presents a threat to the shooter or his/her friends    :?

According to the ODWC website verbiage, BF does not exist in Oklahoma so from a legal standpoint it might be a stretch for LE to issue a citation especially in an ex post facto fashion.

Well I would say that is false.
If it was true then any time anyone finds some new animal and takes one as a example to show the world then they would be in trouble with the law. I do not know of any animals that are listed as known that at least one of them was not studied by scientist. The body they study can come from a dead one found or a live one killed for the purpose.
Also I am 100% sure that things like bugs and rats and other pest are not listed on any states list of animals that people can hunt. Yet people kill them every day just to kill them. Most states do list some animals that are considered pest but not all of them. If only the listed ones could be killed them the game people would need a lot more help in tracking down all the people who kill the ones not listed.

Now days I am not in the shape that I can go tracking threw the woods much (I am disabled) looking for Bigfoot. But if I was I would want a couple of things in place before I found one.
First I would want a good lawyer in place that would be able to handle any legal troubles that might come up for me.
Then I also would want some sort of reporter that would be willing to cover the story seriously when I called and said I had a body.
I also would want to have at least 2 Biologist of some sort that could study the animal as far as DNA and everything else so they can let people know all about the animal.
With all of that in place I am sure that things could be handled right when a body is found or gotten.
But chances are who ever does get the first body they will not handle it right.
They will call someone like the game wardens or police and chances are the first thing they will do is confiscate the body. I would be willing to bet that if that happened the finder (Or killer) will never see that body again. I would even be willing to lay money on the fact that no body would ever see that body again. I am not saying that our governments cover things up like this :-) But lets just say that I do not think they want the public to know everything they know. I am not going to go into the reasons that they would want to keep something like this from going public. But lets just say that things like religion, Border control, Public safety, and a few other things would hit the fans if a Bigfoot was proved as real and closely related to humans.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This story I`m about to tell you is a true story, and There was several witnesses there when it happened.

There was about 6 in all that had decided to have a bigfoot hunt, in what we call (the bottoms.) The night was chilly, with a beautiful full moon. The moon was so bright and full, that you didn`t need your headlights on to drive.
My stepson, (Bart-32 years old), wanted to go with me, he didn`t believe in bigfoot, and just wanted to eat, the delicious meal that was being prepared in the bottoms. One of the members had brought some pheasant sauge, that we roasted over a wood fire, along with potatoes, and chips, and drink with dessert. It was very good in the outdoors. We were experimenting, that maybe the smell of food, with a very nice fire going, and the vehicles, parked around the fire, in the field, that it might intice bigfoot out of curiosity. IT WORKED
It hadn`t been dark very long when the meal was ready. We were all standing around the fire talking and eating when all of a sudden a very loud peacok sound startled us about 10 yards away, in the spencer creek. We all ran over to where the sound came from, with NIV at the ready, and witnessed a large black bigfoot running away from us. Now my stepson didn`t get to see it, but he could sense the excitment we all had.
We went back to the fire and consumed the rest of the meal, one of the members Todd, walked back over to the creek cause he had heard a limb break, and came face to face with the creature again, a big alfa male, he was speechless, and couldn`t talk. Todd came back over to the fire, just in time for the chours of owl`s, and bigfoot hoots, grunts, ect. started in, to the north of us, across the creek. Me and Bart got in the Kiawaski Mule, and headed for no. 7 stand. I told the rest of the guys, we have our two way radio on, and we would stay in contact. Some of the guys split up, and went there seperate ways, and a couple hung around the fire, to draw the interest of bigfoot, which we had agreed to this battle plan prior to going down to the bottoms. We chose this battle plan, in the event that bigfoot or bigfoot`s chose to get closer to us from any direction, we would have a sentry there to intercept him, and if the shot placement was right, to take the shot.
Bart and I started down the path in the mule, and I could tell Bart was a little nervous. He said ,(aren`t you going to turn you light`s on  ), I responded that why for  with that beautiful moon, I can see just fine, and beside that, driving without the lights, maybe we will come upon bigfoot in the dark. He was still not convinced, when all of a sudden, as me made our 90 degree turn to head to no. 7 stand, standing beside a hugh pecan tree, stood a bigfoot. Now I was only going about 3 M.P.H, and slowed down to 1 M.P.H. so that I could see hime better. I told Bart, look there, there`s one now  Bart was speechless. I observed the creature not more than 15 or less paces from us. He was built like a mexican, if you will, 5ft6inches, thick arms, no neck, rounded head, and a beer belly. Yeah that`s right, Now my beer belly is bigger than his, but, he had a belly, and it was comical. Yeah we was scared but the sight of the creature, was fascinating.
I keeped going at 1 M.P.H. not stopping. I had my 444 Marling lever action Rifle with me.But it was in the gun rack behind my head. I had the feeling that if I reached for the rifle, he would have bolted for the woods, which was right behigh him. If I had, had my 12ga. 00buck shotgun, in my lap, at that time, mystery would be solved, and I would have had one. But as it turns out, on second hindsight, if I had, there would have been Hell to pay, because he wasnt by himself, as we found out, as the night progressed.
Bart and I went another 200 yards, to the no. 7 tower stand , and climbed inside and got set up. Even though we were makeing a lot of noise, clanging stuff around trying to get settled, Bart keeped telling me, that that was no bigfoot , but a tresspasser. I keeped disagreeing with him, when all of a sudden the creature started to cough. He really started caughing very bad, like maybe he had T.B. Now at that instant, I thought, that (My God, if I hadn`t have seen him with my own eyes, and heard that coughing, going on, I too would have thought it was a person).
Bart was still thinking it was a tresspasser, I told him that everybody out in this area and beyond, know`s that I would shoot them for being on my land, when all of a sudden the creature steps, out into the open field. I gave Bart the NV, as I was looking at the creature through the scope on my rifle. The shot would have been 150 yards. Bart is starting to hyper, beathing very fast and heavy, he say`s (#@@#, that is a bigfoot, holy cow), The creature starts running as soon as I radio base, Most of the guys got to see it, and yes it was very fast. I couldn`t get a good enough sight picture to take the shot, so I passed it up.
The guys back at base camp were excited, and now things starte pick up. They had a sighting and noise across the creek from them thats about 20 to 30 yards, two fo the guy`s gave chase, to no avail, the jungle over on that side of the creek is thick year round. However, to the North of us, came a bigfoot walking rather fast. We dont know if it was the one they jumped, or another one altogether. Me and Bart was watching him , and I had the rifle at ready, again he was under 6ft, little trimmer than the first one, and his eyes were reflecting the moon, which the eyes, showed a total white. eerie  He saw us in the enclosed stand, because he stopped dead in his track for a moment looked right at us, and then headed back north. We told the other two hunter`s that started out giving chase the first time, but they never saw him again.
About 30 to 45 minutes later, I hear, something walking in the dried leaves behind me and to the south. I turned around to see two black legs, walking not 20 to 25 yards from me and Bart. Bart has the NIV, so I`m useing the scope on the rifle, but the only thing we can see is the black legs, walking upright. It goes to the east, just like the first one that had the bad cough. We were so high up in the tower stand that from the angle, the other tree`s limb, had the torso, blocked from our view.
Another 20 minutes, and another one came from behind us, again no shot, and only see the two legs, walking same direction and same path.
45 minutes later another came by us, put from another direction, and as would be expected, no shot could be taken. Its still thrilling, however, you do hear them walking, they walk very much like a man. they were not trying to be quiet, in their walking.
At one point of the night the other group by the fire, heard alot of monkey gibbery, and shouts, and tree knocking, when there was a very lound sound of something hitting the ground. We later, (the next day, during daylight hours,) found what they had torn up, it was my tower stand no. 11. which weights about 1100 lbs. and was also nailed to a tree. Looks, like one creature done it by himself. Probably the big Alfa-Male, that Todd had seen earlier.
Me and Bart headed back to the fire with the rest of them, cause we were freezeing, Dont know what the temperature got to, but it had to be at least 32 degrees.
We were all tired by this time, we hadn`t had anything happen for the last 2 hours, and figured they had moved on through. We all loaded up and went up to the house. As we were all standing together out in the front yard of the house, discussing the night events, something threw a good size softball size rock, from the woods, and it hit a tree about 15 yards from us, and fell to the ground, and hitting an bouncing off everylimb in that tree. We ran over and put on the NIV, but saw nothing.
Our conclusion, of the night, was that we had stumbled on to either a hunting party, or a migration, we saw or rather words, Bart and I saw 7 bigfoots, that night, I think the other guys, saw a couple each also. Me and Bart were lucking in that the tower stand we were in, we had at least more coming by us, that the other camp didnt get to see.
I would also like to add that a neighbor across the road from me, has alot of cattle, and everytime one of these creatures, came by us and headed for the road to cross, the cattle would go crazy, balling, and some running, with cowbells, clanging. We didnt hear any that got attacked, I just think the bigfoots, that night had something else on the agenda.
Also I would like to say, now you see why I was glad I didnt shoot the bigfoot standing by the tree, we had no idea, there was that many in the woods. It could have been a very bad night for us.
As a side note: Bart is now a full fledge believer in bigfoot, and wants to go with me all the time.

This is a true account of that night of bigfoot investigating so help me God.
