Getting the fish back from Mexico?

I am headed to Puerto Adventuras (about an hour south of Cancun) on Friday 04/28, and plan on doing some deep sea fishing.  We are staying at a resort, so do not have access to an ice box.  I was wondering if anyone knew of a safe and reliable way to get the fish back to my freezer in the US.  Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Also, I have been to the Cancun area several times, and have been deepsea fishing several times, but it is alway big game.  I am more interested in fishing for grouper and snapper (bottom fishing).  Does anyone have any recomendations on who to go with?  Thanks again.

In mexico, clean ice is a huge issue.  If you can find a place to vac-pac that fish, then put it on ice in a good cooler, that could work.  We brought back a bunch of clams a couple of months ago with no problems from El Golfo Santa Clara on the west coast.  You could look into getting a small portable vac packer and do it yourself.

Thanks for the reply, I was already gone when I got it though.

Update: We went with Captain Ricks on 04/30 and had a great day.  It was too rough for bottom fishing, which turned out to be a good thing.  I caught a huge sail fish (too big to get in the boat without hurting it), 4 dorado, and a small baracuda!  My buddy caught a 40lb black fin tuna, and 3 dorado.  We even had a double!  We took the tuna and the smallest dorado to the resort where we were staying and they cooked it for us.  It was probably the best fish I have ever had. The rest we gave to the crew of our boat, they eat some and sell some at the market.  I asked about catch and release once we had enough to feed our group and the guy looked at me like I was nuts, and said they would take the fish.  I've now seen the price of Mahi Mahi and think I should have gave less of a tip since they probably had 75-100lbs of Mahi (Dorado) to sell :grin: .

hey guys

Any tips for a first timer going to Mexico?  I have to go down and meet my folks in Feb. (they are snowbirds)  and i wnat to go fishing. We'll be in Puerto Vallarta.

All of my experience (I have been 9 times) is with the east coast.  I have head that the fishing on the west coast is quite a bit better through and if that is true, you'll be in for it!  I know the prime time is from April-June, so you may be a little early, but I'm sure they can put you on fish.  Good luck.

I'd like to add some info from my one trip to Mexico.  While I did catch an unusually large Striped Marlin out of Cabo, I released the fish, but I was privy to an incident at the airport that might save someone some grief.  An older gent had a large cooler full of Dorado to bring back to the "States", packed in regular ice.  Upon inspection by Mexican customs, he was informed that he could not airfreight a cooler packed with regular ice.  Dry ice only!

I was able to watch this customs inspector wheel this guy's cooler out the main door of the airport, and literally, dump it in the gutter.  The old man had a tear on his cheek, and it was a sad sight to see.  It's not the U.S.A., and you can't argue with those people.

In most of the larger resort areas, you can buy coolers, and I believe that most resorts can supply you with dry ice.

What kind of fish are you after? We find bottom fishing best about 20 miles north of P.V. at a small town called Sayulita. You can rent a 20 foot panga with a guide for a half or full day. Was $35 and $80 last year per person, min of two.

It seems some of you have been to Cancun fishing. I will be in cancun in the later part of June. Does anyone have a suggestion on a Charter service? I would like to fish for Wahoo or Mahi.
